Levi Strauss & Co. stands for five generations of American and global culture. During the course of thelong history of the company, the world has moved on from horses and carriages to electrical cars, from thechaos of war to space, from peace to independence and freedom and from telegraphs to the speed of light of the Internet. In 2003, Levi Strauss & Co. celebrates thecompany’s 150th anniversary together with the 130thanniversary of the invention of the blue jeans by Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis! The company can proudly say that Levi Strauss & Co. created the only piece of clo-thing which survived from the 19th century until the present day. And the company itself has stayed very young. Levi Strauss & Co. sees this as its legacy and gift to the future. It all started with the business acu-men of the young American immigrant called Levi Strauss from the Franconia region of Germany, who wasborn in Buttenheim in 1829. As early as 1847, he, hismother and step-brothers were drawn to America wherehe started in the textiles business. In 1853, he becamean American citizen and first opened his own textile shop in San Francisco, and shortly afterwards a whole- salers. 1873 saw the birth of the famous jeans: Levi Strauss and the tailor Jacob Davis were awarded the patent for placing rivets on men’s trousers.
