Ethernet in machine control
We seem to be in a second phase o theimmense impact that Industrial Ethernetis applying to machine control networking. In the last ten years, the use o Ethernetprotocols cemented its position as thenetwork o choice or machine logic, highperormance motion control and connectivityinto enterprise systems. But now we are moving ahead with morenetworked based applications moving intothe mainstream including saety, conditionmonitoring and advanced measurementsolutions. The ante is continuing to be raisedon the success o network-centric machinecontrols as we move into the uture. With machine control networks oeringthese higher levels o networking unc-tionality, new challenges are also goingmainstream as well. Security and protectiono assets is more important than ever beore. And there is also a challenge on how to applynew processing capabilities most eectivelyin advanced manuacturing. The article, “Designing secure machinecontrol networks” (page 8)takes an in-depthlook into recommendations on how todesign control networks that can handle theconvergence o automation and inormationtechnology. The discussion about networkreerence architectures provides insighton design considerations, guidance, bestpractices and solutions.Other articles in this issue ocus on howmore potent hardware solutions are impactingapplications rom machine vision to advancedmeasurement systems. “Modern visioninspection with real-time Ethernet” (page 20) new levels o connectivity are pushingperormance. Vision systems no longer needa parallel network or image processing, butcan communicate process and image data overthe network to unite vision, control, I/O andmotion. The article “Scientifc Automation combinescontrol and measurement”(page 34)isanother example o how advanced processingcapabilities are adding new unctionality thatleverage machine control networks.Moving into the uture, we can expect to seeIndustrial Ethernet applications in machinecontrol continue to expand. The next stepsin manuacturing will be demanding eventighter control over the complete productliecycle and more integration between thebusiness o making products and managingthe process rom design to obsolescence. It will be exciting to see the impact thattechnology will play in making this vision o the uture become a reality.
