The number of people applying formarriage licenses in D.C. each month hasnearly tripled since the Supreme Courtissued its landmark ruling on June 26overturning the Defense of Marriage Act’sprovision barring the federal governmentfrom recognizing same-sex marriages.The D.C. Superior Court’s Marriage Bureaudoesn’t keep track of the gender or sexualorientation of the couples applying for amarriage license. But court observers say gayand lesbian couples make up the overwhelmingmajority of the additional couples going tothe Marriage Bureau on most days at thecourthouse at 500 Indiana Ave., N.W.“We were sitting there and there wereso many same-sex couples,” said veteranlesbian activist and businesswoman EvaFreund in describing the scene in thewaiting room at the Marriage Bureau lastweek as she and her partner of 21 years,

New York City Council SpeakerChristine Quinn lost her bid to becomeNew York’s first openly gay and firstfemale mayor on Tuesday, finishingthird in a bruising Democratic primaryin which she was assailed on issuesunrelated to her sexual orientation.With pro-LGBT candidate Bill deBlasio, who holds the city’s electedpost of Public Advocate, holding acommanding lead in the final weeksof the campaign, Quinn struggled tocome in second.A second place finish could haveplaced her in an Oct. 1 runoff electionagainst de Blasio if de Blasio failed toreach a 40 percent threshold neededto win the Democratic nominationoutright.But with 98 percent of the voterprecincts counted shortly after 1 a.m.Wednesday, Quinn was in third placewith 15.5 percent of the vote, trailingformer city comptroller WilliamThompson, who had 26 percent of the vote.De Blasio had 40.2 percent.
