THE PROGRAM
Our speaker today was
Steven Day
, a volunteer diver with the Alameda County Dive Team. Steven wasintroduced by
Colin Barnard
. Steven grew up inMemphis, Tennessee not far from the Mississippi River.He studied at Tennessee State University.Steven moved to the Bay Area in 1996 working atJoaquin Miller Elementary School in Oakland as part of the Teach for America Program. Steven currentlyteaches 6
th
grade math and science in the OaklandSchools.He began learning how to swim underneath the water after a chance and life changing encounter with theDiamond Pool in Oakland during a walk late oneevening. He learned as an adult how swim and diveduring many months of lessons both at the pool and withJim Steel
 –
where he learned scuba diving.Steven attended many Alameda Sherriff Dive Teammeetings to learn both about the group and its duties inthe community before officially joining. He showed us aseries of photographs where he reviewed some of theequipment used by the team as well as some of the workthat they perform. The primary tasks of the team involvethe recovery of handguns and human remains. He alsoshowed some of the vehicles that have been recoveredby the team.Steven discussed the complexity of the work illustratinghow the divers use rope for both personal safety andcommunication with their support team on the surface.He talked about the 64 search patterns that all divershave to know to work on search efforts for the team.Steven communicated his love for this dangerous work.He was both an engaging and interesting speaker.Thank you Steven for sharing this unique and dangerousform of community service.
