Geeta: Way To Wisdom And Success - An Introduction

In the earlier series, 'One Minute Wizard' Swami Anubhavananda inspired us to the path of happiness and contentment by leading us through a rational, coherentapproach to the world and its situations. In this journey he guided us by the profound wisdom and humour inherent in his avatar as Mr. Punny. This was notmerely a guide to happiness and fulilment, but was an extract of the choicest elixir distilled from the philosophy and wisdom as embedded in our scriptures, especiallythe Geeta.
In the present series of three articles Swamiji provides a dissertation basedon the Geeta, and lays down a blueprint for success through its wisdomand correct understanding. Beginning with a parable of the snake whotakes the sermon too seriously and literally- but not wisely- Swamiji goeson to expound how we can convert our problems into challenges, and howwith the expression of 'tejas' we can integrate the function of the Supremewith the essential nature of one's own Self. Swamiji concludes with acompilation from the Geeta that can help us to evolve from a mundaneindividual to a complete individual and a successful person. In this lastpart, references to the text in Geeta have been provided. These can act asa guide to the reader to extend his study by an analytical understanding of the relevant pieces of the Geeta. An exhaustive exposition on Geeta (bothin Hindi and English) are available in prerecorded cassettes (both audioand video), for the seekers of wisdom of Geeta to live a successful life.

Tej:
Praglabhyam Bhagavan Sree Krishna emphasises His presenceamong the many in the Tej of extraordinary people. 'Tejas' means a rarecombination of submission to the world and the challenges of life, but with areservation to succeed and thus protect oneself to succeed further in life. There is a story about a Sanyasi and snake, which illustrates this point. There was once a snake living in a village who was known for being anuisance to the villagers. He was living in a hole of an old tree-trunk and allthe villager s were tired of his presence. It so happened that when aSanyasi was passing through the village, the villagers told him about thissnake. The Sanyasi, being, a 'Siddha Purusha', advised the snake not tobite the villagers and went away. After a month or so, when the Sanyasi was going back through the villageagain, he happened to come across the snake who was in a miserablecondition, being beaten by the children and the elders alike. Seeing hispitiable state, the Sanyasi enquired as to what had made him so miserable. The snake replied, "Sir, it is your advice that has brought me to thiscondition. I stopped troubling the people and even hissing at them althoughthey were throwing stones at me with out any provocation from my side."The Sanyasi laughed and asked back, "I only asked you not to bite. Did Iasked you not to hiss?"Many of us are unable to find the right balance between submission to thepeople and to worldly problems, and our interaction with them. This leadsto anomalies in our behaviour, (i) either we deal with our life too harshly, or (ii) we take another extreme step and become self-pitying creatures and
