THE SUMMIT FOUNDATION SURPASSES $11 MILLIONIN GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
At a reception on Thursday June 25, The Summit Foundation announced the award of $432,729 in grantsto 43 nonprofit agencies in Summit, Park, Grand, and Lake Counties. Over the past year, The SummitFoundation has awarded more than $1 million in grants and scholarships to organizations and students inSummit County and neighboring communities. The Summit Foundation Board of Trustees are also proudto announce that total grant and scholarship distributions to date surpassed $11.1 million.“Surpassing the million dollar mark in annual distributions is a significant accomplishment and providesessential support in difficult economic times,” said Cary Cooper, President, The Summit Foundation.“The Foundation is pleased and proud to be able to partner with all of the nonprofit organizations to provide vital services and improve the quality of life we all enjoy in the Summit County and in our neighboring communities,” notes Cooper.Of the $1,058,453 in distributions to the community, nearly $500,000 is going to scholarships and servicesfor children, youth and families. Health care services, programs for the disabled and domestic violence programs received over $200,000 in funds, while programs for our schools and to improve the quality of life in our communities received $81,500 and support of basic needs for families received $76,500.“With the awarding of these grants and scholarships,
The Summit Foundation reached a milestone infunding – awarding over $11 million since 1986,” notes Cary Cooper
. “The Summit Foundation isdelighted to be able to provide funding for programs that benefit our youth and those in need, such asfood banks, utility and rental assistance, victims of domestic violence, hospice and home health services,dental care for low income patients, child care, forest and wilderness stewardship, recreation scholarshipsfor low income children, music therapy, homework and tutoring programs, music in the schools and freeconcerts.”

The Spring 2009 grant funding was allocated in six major categories. Ten health & human serviceorganizations received $93,130. Nine education organizations received a total of $69,978. Threeenvironmental organizations received $22,000. Two Special Initiative grants were awarded to two setsof collaborating organizations for a total of $101,500. $90,000 was awarded to seven nonprofit sportsand recreation organizations. In addition, The Foundation presented $56,121 to 12 nonprofitorganizations responsible for programs or projects in Park, Lake and Grand Counties. Grants wereawarded from The Summit Foundation, The Summit Foundation Endowment Fund and several Donor Advised Funds including The Lenzmeier/Williams Advised Fund, The Eileen and Paul Finkel AdvisedFund, The Millisor Family Fund, The Jack and Pat Thomas Arts Fund, The Brown Family Fund, TheBreckenridge and Keystone Ski Resort Advised Fund, The Grand Lodge on Peak 7 Advised Fund andSummit Association of Realtors Charitable Fund.(A complete list follows this release.)Established in 1984 by the Breckenridge Ski Area, The Summit Foundation is a community, publicfoundation dedicated to improving the quality of life for residents and guests of Summit County andneighboring communities. The cornerstone for The Foundation's fundraising efforts is a transferable ski pass provided by Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Breckenridge Ski Resort, Copper Mountain Resort, KeystoneResort, Winter Park, Steamboat and Vail and Beaver Creek Resorts. Breckenridge Montessori – tuition support; funding provided by The Summit Foundation and The Eileenand Paul Finkel Advised Fund.Carriage House Early Learning Center – funding for scholarships, staff training and classroomenhancements that provide early intervention services. Funding is provided by The Summit Foundationand The Lenzmeier/Williams Advised Fund.Colorado State University Summit County 4-H – support for county program manager and programsupplies.The Keystone Center for Science & Public Policy – funding of scholarships for nonprofit andgovernment representatives to attend the Leadership Summit program.Mountain Top Children’s Museum – a grant for day camp scholarships and program outreach.Summit County Combined Housing Authority – support for the homebuyer’s educational program.Summit County Preschool – funding for full-day, year-round scholarships for children in the SummitCounty Head Start Program, the purchase of Creative Curriculum Assessment and staff training.Funding is provided by The Summit Foundation and Summit Association of Realtors Charitable Fund.Summit Middle School – support for the Music Enhancement project.
