Introduction
Welcome! The purpose of this module is to act as a catalyst, to help you identify your goals bypresenting you with information to which you may react. The reason for this is simple: I have years of professional software development experience. While every client that I work with has different needs, I have noticed one common theme:People explain their needs better when I present them with something to which they can reactthan when I just ask them to explain what they want. With that idea in mind, this book includes a variety of different types of goals. It also presentsa variety of stimuli. These include words, photographs, art and poetry. It is natural to react insome way when you see these pages. You may or may not agree with the sentimentsexpressed, or like a particular piece of art. However, there is an excellent chance that youwill react. That is this book’s purpose: to serve as a catalyst, to help you identify goals moreeasily than if you just sat down with a blank piece of paper and started to write out your goals. This book identifies a variety of categories of goals. There is NO right or wrong order to thesecategories, and what seems important to you at one point in your life, may feel completelyirrelevant at another time. Here is why I have included them: Part of the hassle that somepeople experience with goal setting is that their focus may be too tightly directed. Forexample, someone looking for a job may concentrate only career goals to the detriment of health, relationship and other goals. When this happens, there is a lack of balance.I suggest printing out the pages that seem relevant, writing one goal in each block, three-holepunching both sides of the paper and inserting the printed pages into a three-ring hole binder.Alternatively, you might want to try printing them on index stock, and GBC binding them fromthe top. That way you will have created an easel that will stand up on your desk.If you have a category of goal that is not included, but is important to you, consider this idea:Print out an extra copy of a page, cross out the goal that is identified, and write in the goalcategory that is important to you. From time-to-time, you may wish to review the goals you have written down to see if you aremaking progress that pleases you. In addition, you may occasionally wish to reprint the pages, list your current goals, and compare those with your previous responses.By the way, this module that is part of a larger system. This particular module is designed tohelp you identify your goals. It is not designed to track your progress towards reaching them. That function is accomplished by using the day planner modules.Enjoy the process!Alan JordanDecember, 2003
