Most common congenitalcardiac lesion. Themagnitude of the shuntdepends on the size of thedefect, the relativecompliance of the ventricles,and the difference in atrialpressure. May be combinedwith mitral stenosis(Lutembacher's syndrome)and cause a substantialincrease in the workload of the right ventricle.
Increased pulmonaryvascularity; enlarged rightatrium, right ventricle, andpulmonary outflow tract;normal left atrium and leftventricle; small aorta.
