SACRAMENTO –
Today at 5:00 p.m., Sacramento cityfirefighters will join Councilmembers Steve Cohn and LaurenHammond to host a press conference outside of the city hallannouncing a proposed solution to firefighters’ contractextensions after prolonged negotiations. Hammond and Cohn willpresent the proposal to the city council in tonight’s closed session, before the council breaks for a vacation.Under the proposal, firefighters would accept a 5% pay cut, andno firefighters would be laid off for the one-year duration of thecontract extension. If the city council approves the deal tonight, firefighters will vote on it later this week with a two-day votingprocess. Firefighter negotiators have expressed concern throughout theprocess that public safety be protected under any agreement thatwas reached, urging the city to keep fire stations open andfirefighters on the job. If the city council does not approve this proposal and breaks for vacation, more than 50 firefighters could be laid off right beforethe 4
