PALPALIIW…
EDIBERT L BARENG
Just as I am fond of watching ABS-CBN’s
teleserye,

“May Bukas Pa”,
Iknow for sure, kabsat you are also gluedon television every night that want to beinspired by the drama’s of this nightlysoap opera on television. The show, set in a monastery, features a boy who talks to BRO (Jesus),and turns out to be a healer, thus makingthis group of priest liable on the outcomeof his healing sessions. We expect that
Santino
(Zaijan Jaramilla) on the lead willgive due respect, thus making genuineinspiration and devotion in each character he portrays. In certain episodes, have wetried to put ourselves in each character portrayed by the artist? Television showslike “
May Bukas Pa
”, brings to its viewersthe reality that everyone of us, in our dailyroutines gives true meaning on thecharacters. My co-employee who regularlywatch MBP, told me that she wasoverwhelmed and cries when the prayersof Santino to BRO has been answered.Santino’s young and innocent mind neednot to be questioned because he knowsBRO will be at his side always.By the way, are your prayersbeen answered? Do you see how itworks? God is really neat about things likeprayer. We just have to be really want it inour heart of hearts and be sincere andhappy with our prayers, and then be silent, still, patient and wait with faith.Trust and affection may come asgift, but are most often earned throughpatience and an open heart. This is calledFAITH.*****Moving on is like saying goodbyeto friends for long period of time you’vebeen together. Graduation comes in everystudent’s life (unless they don’t want tograduate). And not only for student, it applies to all of us. Moving on is something to be a part of very day life experiences. Here, it is appropriate toacknowledge that there are some thingsyou have grown to love and that you’llmiss. Keep in mind, of course, that thereare new views over the horizon. Movingon has to be again a view for a moreexciting life ahead. This is called Life’snew CHAPTER.*****SIGNS, just looking around thestreets and roads around the
 poblacion.
 Alot to be noticed.

Have you ever or never noticed our traffic signs. Some has beendilapidated, torn out and even notreadable, just because the letterings areso small and even the colors have beenblurred out or erased. No reflectorizestickers. This causes accident sometimes. This is one of the many complaints I’veheard from drivers who got apprehendeddue to this poor traffic signs. With duerespect to the revised city ordinance – ontraffic rules, fines etcetera. It is proper that this traffic sign boards be given a“face lift” for us all commuters and drivers.By the way it is beautiful to lookat the Quiaoit River in its on-goingrehabilitation. The good Mayor has justput this concern on his year-end report. And it is a fitting time for us all to preserveand maintain the cleanliness of this river. It is interesting to look back, as far as Iremember, this river was a haven for goodwater, laundry venue on weekends, swimming grounds for children and evenfishing ground for people in the poblacion. We hope that with the cooperation of concerned barangays within the route of the Quiaoit River will protect its watersfrom pollution.Still some signs. The recentlyconcluded Batac Farmers Festival 2009,last May 1-7, was a well attended andorganized program of the CityGovernment of Batac with the all-outsupport of the 43 barangays of the city. Itis nice to remember and I am happy to bea part of it. Being chosen as an emcee,

together with my partner ManangCarmelita Tallon. Some says it was aninteresting tandem – mother and son, wellsome do not agree but I can say and weboth agree that it was our moment of experiencing what it is to be a center of attraction for an hour with so muchnervousness inside and out.
Gosh.
Congratulations to the organizers. Seeyou next year for another fun filled andeducational Farmers Festival.More signs, some says that thisis the sign of the worsening globalenvironmental change. Early this year, typhoons entered our country andPAGASA says it was still premature tohave typhoons this early. But we do notknow what is in store for us, why this earlysigns has to be experienced by ours. As aresult, production of crops has beendestroyed and even human lives havebecome the ransom of its destructions.Thank God that in our locality we are safe. But still we are to be properly prepared for it, for we do not know what and when willthese things happen again. Bassit laeng apanagsagsagana kabsat.*****ESCAPE was certainly on our minds these past months, just because of the long summer vacation, when wesought relief from the hectic schedulesand heat of the sun, as well as the badnews on economy globally and job lossesfor others.Me? I went to Baguio for aweekend trip with friends from the US. Icalled it a bonding weekend. In my mind Icannot take away my work I left behind, still my escape for my daily work routinekeeps flashing on my mind. My brieenjoyment was only temporary and thereality of our daily situation – job losses, company closes, shrinking markets, continue to shake us even when we areout in our comfort zones. With all these things weexperience, there is one thing we need tobe in common ground – PRAYER. Just asSantino once says in,
“May Bukas Pa
”, inhis dialogue with Padre Jose, regardingthe no-show of miracle of the Golden Sto.Niño.
“Bakit Father, sawa na ba angmga tao na magdasal?”
Still with fervent prayers, weknow the Lord will not abandon us. He willguide us in our battle, in our struggles. Wewill conquer them all.
Don’t be afraid, I can meet you halfway. We can’t always know, where the roadends upBut with some luck, I know we can go…Don’t be afraid, ‘Cause I’ll meet youhalfway You’re not far behind, if we climb the hillI know there’s still a chance we can findWhenever we imagine….
FILL BOX: Hello to Ma’am VeronGarcia and staff. Happy trip to mybatch mate, Melvin Tabancay boundfor the US. Mg Anabel of Anabel’sEatery for my favorite kare-kare.Happy Birthday to Kuya Noel Narciso.

In line with the National Commission for Cultureand the Arts’ (NCCA) mandate to “encourage artisticcreation within a climate of artistic freedom; develop andpromote Filipino National Culture and Arts; and preserveFilipino cultural heritage”, the City Government of Batacentered into a Letter of Agreement with the NCCA,wherein the latter agreed to assist the City of Batac inthe conduct of a Choreographers’ Workshop on StreetDancing, particularly the Street Dancing of theEMPANADA FESTIVAL scheduled on 23 June 2009.The workshop was conducted on 24 and 25 May2009 by the National Commission for Culture and theArts (NCCA) through the Speakers and ResourcePersons Bureau Program. ON VICTORY and DEFEAT
Celia A. Verano, Master Teacher I, H. Valdez Mem. Elem School
There are only two sides of a coin.Same true in every competition; the winningside and losing side. This general truth isreflected in the recently concluded PalarongPambansa 2009 held at Tacloban City,Province of Leyte, Region 8, on April 27 –May 2, 2009, we shout “hurray!to thevictors and humbly extend our hands tothose on the losing end.In any competition, victory and defeat isinevitable. But losing and winning is not allthat sports is. It’s a great opportunity to learnvalues, know the culture of other places, meet and socialize with new found friends. The popular Charlie Brown of the comicstrip Peanuts, a lovable loser himself said,“Winning isn’t everything, but losing isn’tanything. While winning and thedetermination to win is important, sportsgoes deeper than that. Young athletes canlearn skills that are far more important thanhow to win or lose.Losing can be humiliating but one canlearn to lose with grace. That is what goodsportsmanship is all about: learning toaccept one’s loss with poise. If an athlete played fairly, gave his bestand loss, there is nothing to be embarrassedabout. There is no shame in losing to abetter and more skilled opponent. Muchpride in fact might be taken by competingwell against such an opponent. On the other hand, if an athlete did nottry his best, he might as well beembarrassed, but the humiliation here is notfrom the loss, but from faking short of whatis required of him as an athlete.Winning is important but how one playsthe game is far more important. Everyathlete knows that winning or losing may notbe under his control, but what he can controlis how he prepares. Preparing hard andcompeting to the best he can is considered“winning” itself.
