SURFACE PROTECTION AND LUBRICATION
To prevent staining in transit and storage, ZINCGRIP GA Steel shouldbe coated with a protective oil. The mill can apply a mineral oil with arust preventative combination, a preapplied press orming lubricant,a mill-applied phosphate coating or a chemical treatment (with orwithout oil). A chemical treatment is not recommended i the productwill be painted unless proper surace preparations are taken. Specicchemical treatment requirements (such as RoHS) must be clearlyindicated and reviewed.
FORMABILITY AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES
The ormability o all steel products is a result o the interaction omany variables. These variables include: the mechanical propertieso the steel, the orming system (tooling) used to manuacture parts, and the lubrication used during orming. O these three, AK Steelcan directly aect the mechanical properties o the steel havingtight control over chemical composition, hot rolling parameters, theamount o cold reduction, in-line annealing time and temperature, and the amount o additional processing will allow the production ohigh quality ZINCGRIP GA Steel to meet customers’ requirements.Commercial Steel Type B (CS Type B) and Forming Steel Type B(FS Type B) should be used or moderate orming or bendingapplications. These products are produced rom aluminum-killedcontinuously cast slabs and unless otherwise specied, have acarbon content o 0.02 to 0.15% C and 0.02 to 0.10% C respectively. To prevent the occurrence o futing or stretcher strains during ormingor processing, both products must be ordered as EXTRASMOOTH.These products are subject to aging and the temper rollingeect is temporary. For more stringent orming applications, Deep Drawing Steel (DDS),should be ordered. DDS has a controlled carbon content (< 0.06% C)and is produced in such a manner that parts ormed rom DDS steelshould not exhibit stretcher strain.Extra Deep Drawing Steel (EDDS) or Extra Deep Drawing SteelPlus (EDDS+) should be ordered or the most demanding ormingapplications. These steels, also known as Interstitial Free (I-F) steel, are produced rom vacuum degassed (< 0.010% C), stabilizedgrades. EDDS+ has the lowest carbon content available and hasbeen specially ormulated to be AK Steel’s most ductile product. For high strength applications, ZINCGRIP GA Steel is available asStructural Steel (SS) or High Strength Low Alloy Steel (HSLAS). BakeHardenable (BH), Dent Resistant (DR) and Dual Phase (DP) Steels arealso available.Typical mechanical properties are shown in Table 2.
ZINCGRIP GA Steel is produced in conormance to the ollowingspecications: ASTM A653Base metal chemistry, grades and coatings ASTM A924General requirements and tolerancesFor any specications not listed here, contact your AK Steel Sales orTechnical Representative.
Tailored blanks, tension leveling, re-squaring, slitting, cutting-to-length, and coil coating are just some o the services AK Steel canprovide through arrangements with outside processors.
