SUMMARY
"Two kinds" is a story written by Amy Tan. This story is basically about the expectations parents have for their children and the children's rebellious and bitter attitude towards both their parents and the expectations. In this story, a Chinese mother wants her daughter to be prodigious. She does all sorts of tests on her daughter Jing-Mei to figure out what sort of special talent she possesses. The daughter feels resentment towards her mother. She believes that her mother is trying to turn her into a person she is not and does everything to rebel against her mother. When her mother decided that her special talent was playing the piano, JingMei never practiced and instead, planned on embarrassing her mother by playing badly in church and putting an end to her pride. Jing-Mei realizes that

she wants to follow her own path.

THEME

One cant force their ambitions on another and expect


perfection. This story tell about the struggle of mothers attempt to mold her daughter into a child prodigy.

PLOT CLIMAX -Old Chong and her mother sign her up for a talent show - Jing Mei performed a talent show. RAISING ACTION - Her mother signed up for piano lesson and piano practice for her daughters Jing Mei EXPOSITION -Ni Kans mother mold her only daughter into a child prodigy CLIMAX -Old Chong and her mother sign her up for a talent show - Jing Mei performed a talent show.

RESOLUTION -Never played a piano again and was offered a piano from her mother

SETTING

The story happen at night and at evening

Every night after dinner my mother and I would sit at the Formica topped kitchen table. (night) A piano for me to practice on everyday, two hours a day, from four until six. (evening)

Happen in 1949 after the Communist Party seized control of

China, following years of civil war.

CHARACTERS

JING-MEI

Main character. She is a rebellious child thatt caught between two cultures which is the Chinese culture and the American culture. Jing-Mei resists her mothers attempts at discipline and resents the pressures of high achievement that usually the immigrant parents palce on her children. Jing-Mei know and also understand that her mother is using her to win a talent show competition with her friend. Lindo Jong. She also was stubborn when she refusing to practice the piano and rebellieous to her mother.

Mother

She is Jing-Mei mother. A person that dominate her daughter life Jing-Mei. Have a high expectation to her daughter by wants her to have the best

of both worlds Chinese tradition and American opportunity.


Have a tendency to try to make her daughter to be like she want rather that allow her daughter to develop and choose her own way.
Father

The narrator's father. Was not involved in the mother-daughter struggle over a piano lessons.

He does not attend the recital and in fact the narrator cant tell if he is
horrified or silently amused at her performance.

Lindo Jong

The friend of narrators mother that stimulate her into bragging about her daughters dubious musical talent

She also be called as Auntie Lindo which is married to Uncle Tin and
is the mother of Waverly, the precocious chess prodigy who is the narrators rival.
Mr. chong

Also known as Old Chang- is Jing-Meis deaf and partially blind piano teacher. At Jing-Mei disastrous recital he is the only one who cheers enthusiastically

WAVERLY JONG

She is Auntie Lindo daughter . Was a Chinatown's Littlest Chinese Chess Champion,"

She and the narrator have grown up together and have long been
competing with one another

MORAL VALUES

Parents should stimulate their children to access their interests and ambition by their own hands and not shackle them with parental ambition. Everyone has their own advantages and people should not underestimated or excluded other person. Do not ever constitute a children for personal gain but help to shape them to become useful to each other someday.
