Description

Mass Collaborations describes how some of the worlds leading organizations work with very large groups of people to create and improve products, services and communications.

This document presents research to help organizations evaluate and lead their own Mass Collaboration efforts. The result is the first version of the OPTO framework.

The framework draws on direct study of well known organizations such as Google, Amazon, Dell, Starbucks, P&G, Lego, New Line Cinemas and MUJI as well as a number of smaller organizations such as Fluther, Onforce, Jovoto, Ideabounty, Innocentive, Ford Models, Spinspotter, Buzzmachine, Wordpress, BigSoccer, Shorty Awards and Thunda.

This document reviews what has been achieved so far using Mass Collaboration. It explores why many attempts at Mass Collaboration, fail. A framework is proposed to help improve the planning and execution of Mass Collaboration. Finally some conclusions are discussed as well as recommendations for follow-on work.

For a little less reading, you can see the framework (without the background discussion and interview notes) at www.colaboratorie.org.
