In the heart o the Finger Lakes, people o all ages are practicingopening their hearts, quieting their minds, and becoming moreaware o how they eel. They are experiencing yoga: a harmonizingpractice uniting the body, the mind,and the spirit, to improve healthand well being.Rick Lynch, owner o Finger LakesYoga Center in Canandaigua,believes yoga is or everyone and

years.“Yoga is innitely adaptable. I havepeople rom dierent backgrounds,ages, tness levels, all in the sameclass,” says Lynch. “My slant on yogais that it is or real people.”Lynch says usually when peoplewalk through his studio door theywant to make change happen intheir lie at some level—physically,mentally, emotionally or spiritually. Many have physical or healthproblems, or are experiencing some level o pain.“The practice o poses, yoga breathing, and relaxation helps relievethe stress o modern living, which in time promotes physical andmental well-being,” says Lynch. “Yoga puts me in a better mood.Ater my practice, I eel calmer, more energized and optimistic.”Yoga is not dened in words or Lynch, but in how he eels bothduring and ater the practice. In our daily lives we sometimes orgeta ew important things: to pay attention, to rest, and to breathe. These simple concepts utilized in yoga can make a dierencein how we eel. And yoga can be practiced in a class with otherpeople or at home or any space, alone.“When you let yoga work or you the experience is more thanphysical,” says Scott Hanson, who practices yoga several times aweek in his Canandaigua home. “It’s exercise or your consciousnessand or your body.” The rst thing Lynch tells hisstudents is about settling the mind

postures and breathing are tools tohelp the settle the mind and deepenawareness.“Stretching does not help pain,doing more does not help. Mostneed rest,” says Lynch. “When wehave discomort we must come toa complete stop every day and donothing except pay attention.”Lynch teaches the B.K.S. Iyengarstyle o yoga, emphasizing bodyalignment, attention to detail andbreath-control. He also incorporatesother techniques which aim to reduce pain or limitation inmovement, combining Western therapies with the ancienttraditions o yoga.Lynch says the use o props, such as bolsters, blankets, blocks andbelts allow students o all ages and abilities to perorm yoga posessaely and eectively. He has dierent styles or dierent groups,and determines the best practice to have at any given time. Lynchcan break down a yoga pose into its essential parts and adapt it toeach person’s needs and level o commitment.“One summer I taught at the Ontario County jail and needed tostart with hand stands and warrior poses to get their attention.
