Letters to the Editor
Letter to the Editor
This week I found out my name is shared with someone from Bradner, Ohio. I learned this when friends, clients, and acquaintances started calling, texting and emailing me about the Michael L. Brumbaugh, age 56, from Bradner that was driving his Harley motorcycle while allegedly intoxicated and, for some unknown reason, apparently naked. Unfortunately, he crashed and suffered serious head injuries according to the newspaper. Although I do ride a motorcycle, I ride a Triumph, wear clothes and ride sober. So, it wasnt me in the accident. Im fine. I appreciate those who have reached out to me and my family out of genuine concern who wanted to double check that it wasnt me in the accident or mistakenly thought it was me. Of course, most of our friends and family knew it wasnt me, but couldnt resist calling to tease and offer to loan me some clothes! I wish the Michael L. Brumbaugh from Bradner a speedy recovery. Sincerely, Michael L. Brumbaugh, Sandusky Attorney

To the Voters of Huron

The upcoming election is extremely critical to the future of the Huron City Schools. After 18 years of serving on the Huron School Board, I feel compelled and obligated to address the taxpayers of the Huron Community. As a life-long citizen of Huron, it has been an honor representing and serving the people of Huron. During my years on the Board I have had the privilege of working with many outstanding Board people. Currently there are 7 peoLife Outside the Office ple who have placed their Dr. Juwarkar is married and hat in the ring. group I urge your support for 3 excellent candidates, Mr. Kevin Asher, Mrs. Nancy Bulea and Mr. Eric Muehlhauser. I have had the opportunity to serve with both Mr. Asher and Mrs. Bulea and I cannot say enough good things about their dedication and integrity. Coupled with their educationally-sound and business-like decision-making, they will bring continuity which will be invaluable in these troubled times. My respect is also endless for Eric Muehlhauser, a fine attorney who will compliment Mr. Asher and Mrs. Bulea with his expertise. Mr. Muehlhauser is well-regarded in the Huron Community and is a trusted public servant, witnessed by the different positions he has held in civic organizations, such as President and Treasurer. As a practicing attorney, his knowledge will be of immense benefit to the School Board. The turmoil of the last 18 months has brought needless stress, hard feelings and a financial crisis to the Huron School District. Instead of concentrating on the demands of the School District, the Board Majority has pursued personal agendas, while letting the School Budget spiral out of control. We are now facing major deficit spending and the complete evaporation of our 7.8 million dollar surplus by 2015. I have known the Huron taxpayers to be astute, supportive of education and generous when they believe their tax dollars are being responsibly spent. I urge all Huron voters to study the information that will be forthcoming. After you review these details, I am sure you will see as I do the absolute necessity to have the Huron School District and their tax dollars in the capable hands of Mr. Asher, Mrs. Bulea and Mr. Muehlhauser. The Districts School Board must have a return to the qualities of respect, competence and true fiscal effectiveness which has been badly missing these past 18 months. Yours for the Huron Community, John J. Caporini Current Huron School Board Member Term: 2012 to 2015

The Huron Community Prayer Path

The Huron Community Prayer Path, established in 2006, continues to serve our community by hosting a variety of events throughout the year and providing a beautiful space consisting of The Labyrinth and a spiritual walk in the woods. Still, there are many in our community who dont know the Prayer Path exists. One way to get acquainted with the path and the people who have devotedly worked to keep it up is to become a volunteer to work each second Saturday of the month with other volunteers to help mulch, weed, fill prayer boxes, wash benches, etc. The volunteers have such a fun time and after their efforts, at noon, enjoy a lunch prepared by one of the six churches of Huron. Guess who became a volunteer for the day on Sept. 14?!! Melissa Topey from the Sandusky Register joined the Prayer Path regulars for a morning of fun and well, they put her to work driving the Steiner tractor and then she helped rake mulch. What a trooper !! Visit the Prayer Path at: huronprayerpath.com for more information about the Path and how to become involved.

Citizens for Huron Schools Renewal Levy Steering Committee members are pleased to announce they were able to donate 60 pounds of spaghetti and 15 gallons of meat sauce to the Victory Kitchen in Sandusky this past weekend following the Spaghetti Dinner Fund Raiser held Friday evening. The dinner was a huge success and would make for a wonderful tradition, stated Mr. Scott Matheny, Huron High School Principal and treasurer of the newly formed Committee. The event was held in the Huron High School cafeteria and was open to the public. It was great to see multiple generations enjoying one another and supporting the schools all at the same time, stated Superintendent Dennis Muratori. This event was more than a fund raiser, it was a community gathering. The large number of teachers, support staff and administrators were present throughout the evening serving meals, selling tickets and supporting the event as well. A volleyball and football signed by members of each team was raffled off. Mrs. Charlene Baron won the HHS Volleyball while Mr. Nick Wells won the HHS Football. It is always nice to be able to call long standing supporters of the district to tell them they had won, stated Ma-

By LiAnna Schwerer Forensics Student, HHS

Students from Ms. Jennifer Telenkos Forensic Science Class had the unique opportunity to put down their books and jump into some real world experiences recently. Beginning on Friday, September 6th, Detective Matt Jacobs, Officer Keith Lobsinger, and Ms. Julie Cox visited the class. Detective Jacobs and Officer Lobsinger of the Huron Police Department created a crime scene in the Huron High School boys locker room. Students were read a vague description of the crime before they began their investigation. The student-filled forensics team took detailed notes of the evidence that included minute details such as shell casings of two different sizes and the direction of blood splatter. Students hypothesized what had taken place and sketched out the scene. They later asked Jacobs and Lobsinger questions about the fake crime, real crimes, and what the local heroes have experienced while on duty. It was a thrilling and very educational project for the class. The following week, on Thursday, September 12th, a forensic scientist from the

Bowling Green laboratory of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Ms. Cox, generously donated her time to teach the class the real-world aspects of her job. With thirteen years of experience as an Ohio Bureau Criminal Investigator, Cox, shared with the students, forensic science is the application of science to law through the use of scientific method . The students learned the roles and responsibilities of a forensic scientist firsthand as her presentation included the many different ways specimens may be collected and tested, the different conditions under which samples are tested, and all of the detailed components involved in criminal investigations. Cox talked about how forensic scientists determine what a substance is and the different ways to find fingerprints. For example, Cox explained to the students that to get fingerprints from evidence they sometimes use super glue fumes to solidify the prints. That way the prints will not smear as easily and may be more defined. Several students asked very engaging questions throughout the presentation. It was well worth the time for the class and has left the forensics class looking forward to learning more as the year progresses.

Hurons Mens and Womens cross country teams competed against other area teams at the Erie County Championships held on Tuesday, September 17 at Osborn Park. Also in the top 10 for Huron were Senior Ryan VanCauwenbergh in 4th and Sophomore Shane Thatcher in 6th. Senior Brennan Cockrell was 21st and Junior Ryan Opfer moved up on the team and placed 25th overall. Junior Madi Mize led the Lady Tigers to a 3rd place finish. Madi placed just seconds behind the winner for a runner-up finish in 12:29. Look out for Freshman Sarah Neibler, who snagged 5th place in the race. Senior Liz Delamatre continues to improve her stride, placing 16th in the race, followed by Juniors Sammy Hebert (26th) and Alison Litz (29th). The Tigers will be racing at the Todd Clark Invite at Cloverleaf High School in Lodi on Saturday.

Lady Tigers Block Chargers...

Another week for the Huron varsity volleyball team...another three wins. The Tigers are now 8-1 overall, 6-0 in the SBC. This weeks victories the came over teams from Port Clinton (3-0), Edison (31), and Avon Lake (3-0). The crowning achievement came in the 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-22, and 25-18) defeat of Edison in Milan. Both teams came into the match undefeated in SBC play and the Tigers had not even lost a set. But game 2 saw that streak come to an end as the Chargers used a strong 7-0 run lock up the win. But Hurons defense awoke and began to play well. The front line had 17 blocks that were crucial to the teams success. Senior Megan McCarthy led the way with 9 blocks, followed by freshman Addie Wisehart (6 blocks) and senior Piper Miedema (5 blocks). To be sure, it was a solid team effort, but it is this writers opinion that their play made the difference. Edison is a good, well coached team and will be ready in the second round of conference play. The rest of the stats from the match went as follows: Madi Orzech had 19 digs. Hannah Cantrill played well in both phases of the game contributing 12 digs and a team leading 18 kills. Hadley Sterett was her consistent statistically self with 11 kills and 11 digs. She also seems to be a vocal leader on the floor. The two leading ball handling freshman, Alli Grendow and Gabriella Wood finished with 18 and 22 assists respectively. The first game of the week came against the winless team from Port Clinton. Cantrill, again, led the offense with 14 kills with Wood (15) and Grendow (11) feeding the bulk of the assists. On defense, there were no receiving errors and digs were spread out amongst several teammates. The tough, out of conference opponent this week came to Huron from Avon Lake. The girls topped them in three games 25-15, 25-14, and 25-20. Hadley Sterett led the attack with 11 kills on the night while Piper Miedema and Cantrill had 9 a piece. The Tigers served up 6 aces and only one ball handling error. Grendow finished with 17 assists and Wood had 14 as well. Sterett also led the team in digs with 15 while Elaina Hemker added 12 more. Sarah Schoelwer, Addie Wisehart, and Megan McCarthy all finished with three blocks a piece.
