 Jozi Book Fair
is open to publishing housesand initiatives that are committed to a social justice agenda. The fair is initiated and organisedby Khanya College and Botsotso Publishing tooffer small and progressive publishers a forum toshowcase their publications and activities, network,as well as the opportunity to develop alternativeapproaches and strategies. A range of activities, such as seminars, readings and network meet-
ings, will facilitate the proling of non-mainstream
writers and publishing houses. The provision of awide range of alternative information and existinginformal networks aims at stimulating and en-couraging publishing within social movements andNGOs. Several formats of platforms are offeredfor writers, publishers, agents, translators and press to engage, debate, discuss and plan new projects.

While the book fair aims to prole alternative
publishing stream, mainstream publishers are alsoinvited.

Recently, a decline of progressive and alternativepublishers could be observed in South Africa andinternationally. While there is a vibrant generationof young and emerging writers, activists andpublishers, their work is hardly recognised by awider audience in the region today.
 Jozi BookFair
is a response to the urgent need to rebuilda progressive publishing movement on the conti-nent, which aims to support indigenous languagewriting and publishing. These efforts hope to buildup a reading culture wider than that of just main-stream publications.
