OVERVIEW
A frequently asked question regarding the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computingplatform is how well their storage system (S3) performs with their computing platform (EC2).As an FTP service that runs entirely within the AWS cloud, HostedFTP.com has, based on ourinternal performance data, created this report to discuss the performance you can expectwhen storing and retrieving files between an EC2 instance and S3.
This report overs May 2009 and builds upon the methodology as outlined in our firstreport. For more information please see the February 2009 report.

ANALYSIS
Our analysis focuses on the data presented in Appendix A and B
STORING FILES

The performance when storing files starts at 0.23 MB/s for small (< 100 KB) files andreaches up to 12 MB/s for large files. This gives a fixed cost of
80ms
along with a variablecost of
10 MB/s
per storage operation.
RETRIEVING FILES

The performance when retrieving files stays relatively constant at around 11 MB/s forfiles of any size. This gives a fixed cost of

CONCLUSION
From our analysis we can conclude the following:

The fixed cost when storing a file has decreased to its lowest level yet while the variablecost performance has remained the same.
2.
The fixed cost when retrieving a file remains negligible while the variable cost performancehas decreased to
11 MB/s

15 MB/s.
