EDITORIAL
It is my proud privilege to be the editor for the fourth issue of NE Quest. I am reallyhonored and at the outset, I could not butextend my heartfelt gratitude to all therespected and beloved members of the beautiful forum, NE India Research Forum for giving me this opportunity. Interestingly, mostof the members of the forum have never metand will probably never meet. Still the bondamong us is a reason to smile and it is becoming stronger and stronger day by day.The increase in the number of forum membersis very encouraging. I believe, our forum will become one of the focus platforms to cover upentire researchers of NE region. We heralded in the New Year feeling allecstatic and as the revelry over we are all back on our feet, surely on a fresh and a positivenote. From the experiences and happenings of the past, many thoughts have been knocking inthe mind. Among those, in this editorial, Iwould like to shade light only on two points:one is ‘global warming’ and the other is ‘thefaculty crisis in our colleges’.In many forms, the 19
th
century conceptshave become obsolete with changes in perception and attitude towards various issuesranging from business to entertainment.Surprisingly, the environment exists as anantithesis of its own nature. Though we think ourselves as a part of globalization, in manysenses, we are not globalized at all. Now,global warming is emerging as the most severewarning for the mankind. We have to keepaside the geographical barriers to fight againstit. We must keep in mind that there is nodistinction like Indian carbon or Americancarbon. Recently, UN report says that there isa small window of opportunity in this centuryfor limiting the global temperature increase to2
°
C. If it is not done, humanity will face aseries of climate changes that will wreak havoc on the planet including flooding of coastal areas, crop failures, epidermis, water scarcity, increased natural disaster and manymore. Unfortunately, to handle the problem, the gap between scientific evidences and political response remain still large.Developed countries should cut their carbonemissions at least by 80% by the year 2050with 20-30% cut by 2030 to save the earthfrom a complete environmental catastrophe. Itis noteworthy that the climate change willaffect the world’s poor most, particularly fromAfrica, Asia and South America. At the recentUN conference on climate change in Bali, global warming was the main issue. Lots of decisions have been taken and we have to look forward for their implementation. Beingamong the top carbon emitters, India’s stand inthis context has to be scrutinized in comingdays. Here we need a change in our attitudeand have to think more globally. We should beinspired by Al Gore and Rajendra Pachouri, Nobel Peace Prize winners for 2007. Let’smake one resolution in this New Year to saveour mother earth from global warming.Faculty crisis in Indian academicinstitutions has been a long term problem. Thescenario in the colleges of Assam is even more painful and the situation in other NE states isnot an exception. It is not only confined to thequantity but also to the quality. Consideringthe Government’s stand, it seems, the situationwill become more dangerous on quality perspective in coming days. The future of theeducational standard depends on the buddingstudents and to produce good students we needgood teachers. Now the question is, who will join in a college? The answer is ‘no one’ if anyother option prevails. The reason? Obviously, the payment scheme. One has to work for twoyears for a fixed payment that is one third of the fellowship of a research scholar! Isn’t it astrange? We must confess that after a certainage, we have to take some extraresponsibilities and for that we need a goodearning. To be honest, with knowledge, moneyis the prime necessity for living. Governmenthas to eye on it for betterment of our futuregeneration. Otherwise, it is difficult to attractthe creamy layer students for those jobs. The posts can be fulfilled anyway, as there is noscarcity of pass out students. Still the questionof quality remains unanswered. It is for sure,we are going to be the victim and MNCs areready to take that creamy layer with handful packages. At last but not the least, Iwish all the members a veryhappy and prosperous
NewYear
and a fruitful ‘
