dventure Canada returns to the great Southern Ocean as the hemisphere blossoms rom spring into summer. Each year, when the ice melts and breaks up,new and varied landscapes o sculpted ice and snow are ormed. Our departures are just a ew weeks into the Antarctic season and we will experience itahead o most travellers – the landscape will be resher, whiter and bare ewer signs o human passage. Tis is Antarctica at her most photogenic. During thisseason we witness the nesting behaviour o various penguin species and may even observe the hatching o the Adélie chicks. Weddell seals haul out on the astice and Crabeater and Leopard seals can be seen on the remains o the winter sea ice. South Georgia’s beaches bustle with Fur seal activity while the sausage-likeElephant seal pups rolic in play ul groups. With luck we’ll catch a late example o the beautiully synchronized soaring o two Light–mantled Sooty Albatross. In the Falklands, the spring wildowers and rare orchids are in bloom, creating stunning photographic opportunities. It is also the prime season or birdlie andtheir courting behav iour.Adventure Canada has two Antarctic sailings planned or 2010. We begin with
 Antarctica Uncut,
a comprehensive 20-day exploration o the Antarctic Peninsulacoupled with the remote islands o South Georgia and the Falklands.South Georgia, with its rich historical tapestry and huge concentrations o wildlie, is the jewel in Antarctica’s crown. Te liestyle in sub-Antarctic Falkland Islands resembles that o a small English or Scottish village and its communities are highly sel-contained. On our 11-day
Classic Antarctica
,set oot on

and sail through its picturesque bays and ice-carved passages. Get upclose and personal with penguins as we spend time in rookeries observing and photographing these delightul and entertaining animals. Witness spectaculartabular icebergs o impossible scale as they oat by in shades o iridescent lavender and blue. It is no exaggeration to say that these programs are no ordinary adventures; people who visit these places describe it as not only a voyage o discovery but also a spiritual experience.
Ushuaia & Beagle Channel
At the very tip o South America, Ushuaia is the southernmost city in theworld, and is the capital o ierra del Fuego. Located on the shore o theBeagle Channel and surrounded by the Martial Mountains, it aords thesimultaneous enjoyment o sea, mountains and orests. It is rom Ushuaiawe board the

South Shetlands
Just over 120 km north o the Antarctic continent, these spectacular volcanicislands have steaming black sands and are strewn with the physical remainso the whaling era. Consisting o 11 major islands and several minor ones, totalling 3,687 km

Te islands, discovered by the British mariner William Smith in 1819, areclaimed by Britain, Argentina, and Chile. Our visit to the South Shetlandswill include Elephant Island and Deception Island.
 Elephant Island
Elephant Island is known as the over-wintering place o Shackleton’s men.Aer the loss o their ship
Endurance
, the twenty-eight brave souls oundreuge on the bleak shores and were stranded or 135 days in 1916. Ourexpected landing site, Point Wild, is named aer Shackletons second incommand, Frank Wild, who supervised the twenty-one men stranded onthe island while Shackleton and ve others embarked on an epic rescuemission in a small open rowboat.
 Deception Island
Approximately 10,000 years ago, a violent volcanic eruption hollowedroughly 30 km³ o molten rock rom Deception Island, creating the PortFoster caldera. Over y percent o the island is covered by permanentglaciers. We can expect sparse but exceptional ora, including at leasteighteen species o moss or lichen that have not been recorded elsewherein the Antarctic, two o which are endemic to the continent. Te world’slargest colony o Chinstrap penguins is located at Baily Head, on the south-west coast, where an estimated 100,000 pairs nest. Nine species o seabirdsalso breed on the island. Te remains o the whaling station here are themost complete example o whaling history in the Antarctic.
 Antarctic Peninsula
Claimed by Britain, Chile, and Argentina, the Antarctic Peninsula isa 1,300 km extension o Antarctica reaching toward the tip o SouthAmerica. Ice-covered and mountainous, visitors are awed by the size o Antarcticas endless landscape and the accessible wildlie. Te toweringpeaks are considered an extension o the mighty Andean range thattraverses the west coast o South America. Global warming is changingthe ace o Antarctica and the handul o research stations that dot thePeninsula are producing data that substantiates claims o irreversibleclimate change. We plan to visit the British historic site o Port Lockroy.
Falkland Islands
Te Falklands are a concentrated group o more than 740 Islands, situatedover 640 km o the south-eastern tip o South America and are a sanctuary or some o the world’s rarest and most spectacular wildlie. Enroute wemay see Commerson’s and Dusky Dolphins, Pilot Whales, Humpback Whales, Killer Whales, and rare Southern Right Whales. Above the water
