producers decided at a point, back in theInsatiable era, that films just got too talky and people were fast-forwarding to their favoritesex scene and not paying attention to the story.
G&C: It’s sad that people now sit in frontof their computers surfing porn.At least peo-ple used to go out to a theater, like thePussycat Theater and get some fresh air – except for theAmmonia and Chlorine smell.Marilyn:
Nobody gives a shit about pornoanymore because it has its place in our society. They’ve conquered all the avenues of you knowthree guys fucking a chick in her ass. Who’sgoing to do that? Nobody – at least not at home. So, it’s just become a sex circus.
G&C: Speaking of circuses, you knewLinda Lovelace, who they call “the mostfamous porn star of all time.” Yet she reallyonly made one movie (Deep Throat) thatshe’s famous for, and you made all thesefilms. And then, she came out and trashed theadult industry and said that she was druggedthen forced into sex. I’m just curious whatyou thought of Linda Lovelace?Marilyn:
Well, I was married to Chuck, her husband, and what happened was that I got thereat the end of their relationship. They werein the middle of this horrible divorce. Iheard her screaming and yelling athim on the phone. Basically, sheran off with a choreographer butit didn’t work out. Because, Imean, he had it all set up for her to be starring in LasVegas at a major hotel. Thatwas my dream, that’s why Iwanted to be with Chuck because I wanted him tomake me into a superstar.I wanted to be AnnMargaret. But anyway, when Linda’sbook cameout, Chuck and I were inLondon. I was doing aone woman stage showthere for about eightmonths called SexSurrogate. I read himLinda’s book, becauseChuck really wasn’t a bigreader. It really saddened him because, I mean, if you speak to anybody who was around inthose days, she wasn’t drugged, she wasn’t forced to do anything. She was a hooker with a scar up her middle from a car crash, who Chuck saved. I mean Chuck had his bad points, true. He was a Svengali-ish kind of a person.ButIthinkwhenLindacameoutanddenouncedthe“business”andthenwashangingwithGloriaSteinemitgotnuts.Peoplewouldhandmenotessaying Gloria Steinem wants you to call her, sheknows you’re being forced to do this. AndGloria Steinem wrote in her book about me howshe knew I was forced into it and that I was being hypnotized. I was thinking, you knowwhat, that’s bullshit.
G&C: So, for the record, you always feltthat this was something you enjoyed and didvoluntarily?Marilyn:
Of course. Chuck and I alwaysdiscussed what I was going to be doing and if I didn’t want to do something, I didn’t. I’m avery strong-willed person -- I’m a Taurus. Nobody tells me what to do. I learned a lotfrom Chuck, such as, “always give peoplewhat they don’t expect.” They always expect a porn star to be chewing gum, nasty red hair, swinging their purse. Anyhow, my friendSammy Davis Jr., Hugh Hefner and Chuck allgot together and decided they weren’t going tomake a big deal out of Linda’s book – theywere just going to be silent about it. Becausethey knew that if they said something about it,it would just add more fuel to her book sales. Then, Linda did an about-face and did a spreadfor Legshow Magazine. Finally, I guess shegot drunk and crashed her car. But the weirdthing about it… she died on my birthday. ThenChuck died about three months later in 2002.So you know, I feel for her family and whenshe had a liver transplant, I sent money.
G&C: I think rational people realizedthat Lovelace’s book made no sense – andhaving a gun to her head during sex scenesseemed kind of ridiculous.Marilyn:
Chuck and I did own a gun store.[laughter] But the thing is that I know he didn’tkick her around and all that shit. She just hadsour grapes because I became way more famousthanshedid.Nottopatmyselfontheback…butI did have more talent than her... I can act, I cansing, I can dance.
G&C: Yes, I remember you were in themovie The Owl and the Pussycat withBarbara Streisand. You did some other films, and worked with Wes Craven. And then, youwent off to do Behind the Green Door. Butwhy didn’t you continue in legit films withthose early credits?Marilyn:
I was blackballed from main-stream films. When I first started out I did go toacting school – I did have a fantasy about beinga mainstream movie star. That’s what I wantedto do, I wanted to act, I wanted to sing and Iwanted to dance. At that time, Last Tango inParis was coming out and I felt that it was a fea-sible thought that I could possibly do that. Butyou know my dreams were crushed. I mean, Ihad been up for a lot of different roles in main-stream films and either the producer’s wife or the stars themselves nixed them.
G&C: I’m curious about some of thosedays with the Mitchell brothers. You werearrested at their San Francisco theater in1985, correct?Marilyn:
Let’s just say that from 1980 to1985 I did a bunch of really hot, very sexyshows. Actual sex shows, with other women…no men involved. I mean like five balls up my butt. This was all Chuck’s idea, of course. Thenyou know like the string of pearls, you pull themout.
G&C: What are your most vivid memo-ries you have of that club and the things thatwould go on there?Marilyn:
Oh God, I mean The CopenhagenLounge, that’s when they locked the doors andthe guys with their little flashlights would doall kinds of stuff. For that era, it was outra-geous. We had people lined up for blocks. Imade a lot of money at that place. The Mitchell brothers made even more. I put their place onthe map, you know. Getting arrested didn’thurt. But my bodyguard had some coke on himor something… oh wait, he had a gun – that’swhat it was.
G&C: Do you ever wonder how you sur-vived those days? It’s just one extreme expe-rience after the other.Marilyn:
I will tell you; in those days there
