FOR
DEC.
7
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration willlaunch an unmanned Gemini spacecraft this month on a suborbitalflight and ram it back through the atmosphere at
16,600
miles
per
hour
to test
the spacecraft
under
maximum reentry heatingconditions. In addition, the spacecraft will carry all Gemini sys-
tems
required to qualify it and the launch vehicle
for
two-manorbital flight. The flight, designated GT-2, scheduled for no earlierthan Dec.
7
will last about
20
minutes with the spacecraftreaching an altitude
of
about
106
miles
and
traveling approxi-mately
2,150
statute
miles downrange from
Cape
Kennedy.
U.S.
Naval forces will
be
deployed along the flight pathand will recover the spacecraft about
800
miles east
of
SanJuan,
A
successful flight will insure
a
margin
of safety
on
later
manned
Gemini missions where
normal
reentry heating will
be
substantially
below
thesevere
rates
planned
for this
flight.
