atients in Josephine County andsurrounding areas can now getadvanced diagnostic imagingof their hearts and vascular systems as well as treatment for peripheral vasculardisease in the new cardiovascular labat their local hospital, Tree RiversCommunity Hospital (RCH).Te state-of-the-art cardiovascularand interventional radiology laballows cardiologists and interventionalradiologists to examine patients forblocked arteries, heart disease, andother conditions using a procedureknown as angiography. Last year thehospital sent some 400 patients to RogueValley Medical Center in Medford forangiography procedures.“Tis is a dramatic improvementfor our patients,” says Brad Personius,MD, a board-certified cardiologist withCardiology Consultants of Grants Pass.“With easier access to angiography, we can expect better outcomes for ourheart patients.” Dr. Personius addedthat patients who need further medicaltherapy will continue to receive care closeto home. Tose who need open heartsurgery or a coronary stent can bemoved to Rogue Valley Medical Center,a nationally recognized heart center.o perform an angiogram, a doctorguides a tiny wire to the heart or artery and injects contrast dye that will show upon an X-ray. Te result is vivid picturesof the heart and the arteries, whichthe doctor can see live on a computermonitor and spot exactly where thereare blockages or other problems withthe heart, arteries, and other systems todetermine the following:• If arteries supplying blood to the heartmuscle have become narrowed• If the patient needs a stent—a scaffold-like device to prop open blockedarteries or ducts

• If the patient needs heart or vascularsurgery • If there is an aneurysm (a bulge on anartery caused by a blood vessel wallbecoming weaker)Interventional radiologists will performmany procedures in the lab, includingbiopsies; opening blocked peripheralarteries in the arms and the legs; relievingobstructions and draining abscesses in theliver, gallbladder bile ducts, and kidneys;inserting ports for use in chemotherapy; andembolizations for life-threatening traumas,spontaneous internal bleeding, and to cutoff blood flow to tumors.“We are very excited to use ourinterventional radiology advanced trainingto do many procedures, both routine andadvanced,” says Marcus Bryner, MD, aninterventional radiologist.“It’s all part of an ongoing effort to bringbetter heart and vascular care to the area,”says Win Howard, CEO of RCH. “TreeRivers is a strong community hospital.”In recent years RCH, working withits physician partners, added cardiacrehabilitation services, installed a systemfor fast computer retrieval of X-rays, andintroduced advanced 64-slice C scanningtechnology to the hospital to make high-quality images of the heart and the vascularsystem. With the new cardiovascular lab,Dr. Personius; Doug Burwell, MD;and Rick Snider, MD, of Cardiology Consultants will be testing patients for heartdisease. Radiologists Jonathan Wood, MD,and Dr. Bryner of Tree Rivers Radiology  will provide interventional services.
