here is a poem that i wrote about a madman in an asylum. he thinks that his body is trying to tell him to kill himself. he is trying to find the purpose of his life, with whatever reason or sanity he has left, however little. but, in the end, he does not recognize his irrational thoughts as insanity. i wrote this poem as an assignment in my english honors class because i was supposed to try to write something in the dark style of edgar allan poe.

Ravings of a
Madman
By Carolina AlvarezBeating, beating, always beatingLoud enough to be heard by allRepeating, repeating, always entreating,“Body, hearken to my call!”Breathing, breathing, never ceasingTo stop this once and for all,Thinking, thinking, subconsciously thinking,“Body, hearken to my call!”Walking, walking, slowly walking,Slow enough for life to stall,Beating, breathing, thinking, walking,My body still listening to its callSeeking, seeking, yet never reaching,Life within these padded wallsExisting, existing, completely, yet missingMy mind, left behind in Hades’ fiery hallsFire! Fire on the wall!Dear God, its going to burn us all!Would someone, the fire brigade, please call?Someone please answer to my call!Hurry, before this structure falls! No one will hear me out at all!Me, held captive by padded walls!Yet, if I know myself at all,My body hearkens to its call.Thrashing, thrashing, teeth wildly gnashing,Battling the fire on the wallYet, if I know myself at all,My body hearkens to its call.Running, running, I keep runningWith nowhere to run at all,But, if I know myself at all,My body hearkens to its call.Screaming, screaming, then peacefully dreaming
