Days of the Week & Phonics Lesson on May 29th, 2009 F]OwZ at (Ustoan
Elementary) #For 6 Students from Grades 1 to 6Began with the standard "how are you?" After going through it with the class, Iasked one usually shy 2nd grade boy "how are you?" and when he said somethingbesides "fine" I moved on.HRT then introduced the days of the week. She had the days written in romaji onflashcards and tried to have the students decode the pronunciation. They struggledand were essentially unable to figure out any of the words. Was a another goodreason why the kids should learn phonics. She also an activity I struggled with before, which was introducing the daysthrough their relationship to planets. I don't think this is really an effectivestrategy, though it could have just been because I did a poor job of introducingthe concept.I then did listen and repeat a few times through, then HRT introduced "What day isit today?"First activity was I asked the question to one student, and the HRT pointed a dayon the board. Student was to say that day.Next, the students all asked me together, and whatever day I said, they walked upas a group over to the flashcard. Then it was time for the phonics section. I still don't know a really proper wayto introduce the concept, but I started by going through the alphabet andreviewing most of the phonic sounds (only 1 if a letter had more than 1). I gavethe kids a chart from Joyful Penmanship which had the letter, the multiple phonicsounds in katakana, words illustrating the pronunciation and a picture. Myfavorite is the tiger brushing his teeth.Wasn't too fun. Afterwards tried to show how kids could use phonics sound tofigure out "Sunday." Was probably too hard a word and didn't really get across. Then we did the first exercise of the "Start Sounds" worksheet. I was surprisedand encouraged to see the students did extremely well. Sounds were fairly obvious, but still.Only had 5 minutes left at this point, and I wanted to respect the HRT's lessonplan, so then we moved into the scheduled last activity of singing "Are yousleeping?" and didn't do the "Yamanote Line" exercise in the phonics worksheet.Thoughts:# Good and great are sticking with the "how are you?" song.# Students walking to day would work better if done by one at a time.# Find a better way to explain to the kids the importance of what I'm trying toget across with phonics.# It's not a sexy subject, but can certainly be more fun than it is.# Consider if teaching phonics at all is worth it for this group.Next Time:# "How are you?" song as a warmup.# Finish out with the second half of the phonics activity. Try to have them do
