Rope Splicing
Ever since most ancient civilizations discovered it, rope became one of the mostuseful tools in every day activities. It was used in hunting, building, fishing, sailing, etc.For a long time, ropes were made of natural fibers. Hemp was the main materialused because of its strength and durability. In the 18th century, new types of materials were developed for rope splicing. These included both natural fibers, like manila, and synthetic ones, like nylon. While hemp ropes still continue to beused due to the low price of production and great availability, these new types of rope allowed for new and heavier applications, since they performed better thanhemp. With time, the way to handle rope became a skill in itself. It is part of the basictraining of groups that use ropes a lot, like scouts, firemen, soldiers, and sailors.Several types of using and tying the rope were invented, each with different effectand strength. One of the most useful forms of ropeworking is rope splicing. Rope splicing is atype of rope arrangement when two ropes are joined in a semi permanent way.Rope splicing is different from other types of rope joining in the sense that thestrands of the ropes are untwisted and then interweaved with each other. One of the most common uses for rope splicing is to create a stop in the rope. This stop will prevent the rope from sliding fully through an opening. The purposeof this is to let the rope slide freely through the opening without fear that thewhole rope will go through, probably losing it and any object that was attached toit.Rope splicing is more difficult do to than a knot, which serves the same purpose. However, rope splicing is preferred since it keeps most of the rope strength. Aknot, on the other hand, reduces the strength of the rope greatly, increasing therisk that the rope may break. And a broken rope would defeat the very purpose of the knot.
