Research and consultancy on thermal properties for a wide range of materials, from -170 C to 2000 C, under controlled atmospheres.
At NPL we can measure: thermal conductivity, heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, thermal expansion, thermal transmittance and thermal resistance. For a wide range of materials such as: metals & alloys, refractories, ceramics, graphite, composites, polymers, foods and insulation.

Current Work:
EMRP Projects: Project Powerplant
Methods to increase the efficiency of large-scale power plants The thermal performance of materials is important to sectors such as: Research into advanced materials for more energyefficient turbines

Energy generation Sustainability Advanced manufacturing

Project Metrofission
Addressing the materials measurement challenges posed by Generation III+ nuclear plant designs

Facilities development: Extending capabilities to higher temperatures and wider range of materials
Extending range and accuracy of direct thermal conductivity apparatus for composite materials between -100 C >300 C Improving traceability of direct thermal conductivity measurements to provide design data for metals, alloys and graphite for high temperature applications.
