Introduction
FireStopping Legislation
2
Fire Protection
Fire Prevention is a critical consideration for all those who are responsible for creating the design, specification and construction of new buildings. It also has to be considered in the ongoing maintenance of occupied premesis. The causes of fire vary and are unpredictable. Often the cause is outside the area of influence of design engineers and planners. But the ability to control the spread of fire once it has started can still be influenced. Effective fire fighting within a building is generally achieved through a combination of active and passive FireStop systems. Active FireStop Sytems Active fire prevention systems are designed to react to the outbreak of a fire which is then suppressed with the help of sprinkler systems, halogen installations, fire extinguishers or other proactive machanical systems. The effects of the fire may also be lessened by the removal of smoke from the equation. By including alarms and emergency lighting, active systems also serve to provide escape paths for people inside the building. Passive Fire Prevention Sytems Passive fire prevention systems are intergrated in the structure of a building ensuring that once the fire starts it is limited to a fire compartment that is composed of fire rated walls, floor and ceilings. To maintain the FireStopping integrity of walls, floors and ceilings, all gaps, openings and channels are to be sealed to prevent the escape of fire and smoke. Therefore the Control of Fire Spread and limitation of damage is principally achieved through the compartments of a building. These compartments are bounded by fire resisting elements: Walls / Floors / Ceilings Fire resisting elements are often breached to permit access for services or functional joints. Cables / Pipes / Ventilation systems Gaps between fire resisting elements around the penetrations must be sealed so that the fire integrity of the fire-resisting element is maintained. National Regulations The following national regulations are published as statutory instruments by Parliament with respect to life safety purposes: Building Regulations (England & Wales) 1991 These regulations are expressed as functional requirements. Approved Document B (2000 Edition) Fire Safety, gives non-manditory guidance. Building Standards (Scotland) 2001 These are expressed as functional requirements. All of the provisions of Technical Standards Part D and Part E are mandatory. These provisions are wavered only by means of a relaxation. Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1994 Basic functional requirements with approval solutions are given in Technical Booklet E which is similar to England and Wales Approved Document B. Building Regulations (Republic of Ireland) 1997 The building regulations in the republic of Ireland are similar in arrangement and content to the England & Wales Building Regulations and are covered by Technical Guidance Document B. Q. Why does FireStopping need to be carried out? Approved Document B states the following points with regard to reinstallation of fire rated elements:
If a fire separating element is to be effective then every joint, or imperfection of fit, or opening to allow services to pass through the element should be adequately protected by sealing or FireStopping so that the fire resistance of the element is not impaired 11.2
This is quite categorical in its assertion that every opening in a fire rated element needs to be reinstalled.
Introduction
Fire Protection Continued
In addition to any other provisions in this document for FireStopping: a. Joints between fire separating elements should be FireStopped and b. All openings for pipes, ducts, conduits or cables to pass through any part of a fire separating element should be: i. kept as few in number as possible and ii. kept as small as practical and iii. FireStopped (which in the case of a pipe or duct should allow for thermal movement) 11.12 The final sentence states that FireStopping materials should allow for thermal movement rules when using sand/cement and concrete for filling round services. Technical Standards (Scotland) state: A compartment wall and compartment floor must have no openings and must provide a barrier to fire between the parts of a building to be divided including any roof space. Except for: Where there is a service opening i. Which is of suitable construction or where the services are suitably protected so that in the event of a fire the level of fire safety performance required of the compartment wall or compartment floor is maintained, and ii. Which is suitably FireStopped D3.14 BS7671 further adds: Where a wiring system passes through elements of building construction such as floors, walls, roofs, ceilings, partitions or cavity barriers the openings remaining after passage of the wiring systems shall be sealed according to the degree of fire resistance required of the element concerned. 527-02-01 where a wiring system such as conduit, cable ducting, cable trunking, busbar or busbar trunking penetrates an element of building construction having specified fire resistance it shall be internally sealed so as to maintain the degree of fire resistance of the respective element as well as being externally sealed to maintain the required fire resistance. 527-0201 Q. Why do you have to have all your FireStop products tested?
The building Regulations Approved Document B states the following with regard to testing
The product should be in accordance with a specification or design which has been shown by tests to be capable of meeting that performance or have been assessed from test evidence against appropriate standards Appendix A 1A
Provide a propriety sealing system which has been shown by test to maintain fire resistance of the wall, floor or cavity barrier. B3 11.6
Technical Standards (Scotland) require: The requirements of D3.14, D4.7, D5.8 and D6.7 for FireStopping of service openings and D6.9 for FireStopping will be met in the case When different movement is anticipated, whether in normal use or during fire exposure by the use of a proprietary sealant or sealing system which has shown by test its ability to maintain the required level of safety performance under the conditions appropriate to its end use B2.2.1

Description
Pipe Wraps comprise of layers of a graphite based intumescent sheets encapsulated in a polythene sheath. The product is manufactured to be wrapped around the outside diameter of the pipework or trunking and is secured by means of a self-adhesive strip to give a 2 hour or 4 hour fire rating. The Intumescent Pipe Wrap is then positioned within the compartment wall or floor so that the edge of the product is left exposed at the fire side of the wall or soffit. The Intumescent Pipe Wrap is then sealed into the structure with FireStop Compound. Under fire conditions, the Intumescent material expands against the structure and fills the void left by the burnt out plastic. For walls it will be necessary to fit two wraps to prevent fire spread fire spread from either side. If the thickness of the wall is smaller than the width of the wrap, then only 1 wrap is needed.

Installation
fischer FireStop Compound is used to seal service penetration openings against the spread of fire. When used in floor openings it is capable of taking light foot traffic e.g. For maintenance purposes. Remove all loose material from opening of fire barrier. Fit shuttering or temporary plywood or similar material like FCPS. Add the Compound to clean water, and mix either by hand or with a power mixer. Keep dry and protect bag from impact damage. Clean all tools and equipment immediately after use with water.
FIRE STOP
Floor Openings Pouring: Mix compound with water in 2.5:1 parts by volume. Do not mix weaker than 2:1. Set the shuttering into the opening ensuring a tight fit so that once the required depth of Compound is installed it finishes flush with the floor slab/screed unless otherwise specified. Mix and pour Compound until the required thickness is achieved. Reinforcing requires 12mm dia. bars placed at a maximum of 200mm centres across the short span only. The bars may be either recessed into the surrounding structure by a minimum of 50mm on both sides or supported on an angle securely fixed to the structure, all positioned approximately 30mm above the bottom surface of the compound to ensure adequate fire protection from below. Existing compound installations can be easily drilled or sawn to allow the provision of additional or replacement servises, and subsequently re-sealed. Recommended minimum clearance between services and surrounding strucutre - 50mm or half the diameter, which ever is greater.

Installation The Coated Panels are simply cut and friction fitted between the services and the edges of the structure. FiAM or FiGM is then used to seal the joints and it is coated with FPC. * The fire rated coating is used as an adhesive to bond sections of panel together into a barrier and to the surrounding structure. All joints in the barrier are pointed in with intumescent Acoustic Sealant to form a monolithic layer. *(Plastic pipework needs to be sleeved with fischer Fire Collars prior to installation of the coated panel system.)
In floor applications, fischer Coated Panel has to be protected from physical damage by foot traffic (e.g. with a ply board or chequer plate platform). For large floor openings we would advise using fischer FireStop Compound, for walls, openings (unsupported) max 1200 x 600mm. Refer to fischer FireStop specialist for larger openings. fischer Coated Panel System can be used as a double board system for enchanced acoustic and insulation ratings.

Drill a hole in plasterboard, masonry or concrete to suit the outside diameter of the conduit. For masonry and concrete substrates, cut the fischer Conduit Intumescent (FCi) to suit the thickness of the wall/floor and simply push through the hole. For plasterboard applications, cut the fischer Conduit Intumescent (FCi) leaving 12.5mm of the Conduit exposed on both sides of the wall. fischer Conduit Intumescent (FCi) can then be linked with standard couplings to ordinary electrical conduit. For a cold smoke seal, apply fischer Intumescent Acoustic Mastic (FiAM) into the Conduit to a depth of 10mm.
