A Story about Sharing
by Donna Marie Merritt
A group of children came into a room. The Caregiverhad laid out wonderful playthings for them. Somerushed in first and claimed the toys as their own, leaving the others with nothing.Snack time came. Again, the Caregiver provided forthem, putting out healthful, delicious food to sustainand nourish them. Although there was enough for all,the same children who had taken the toys now saidthey were hungrier after playing so much. Thesechildren took all the food. The others went hungry. When it was time to go outside, these same childrendecided they would be warmer with two coats, while the rest of the Caregiver’s little ones shiveredin the cold.“How ungrateful those children are! Why haven’t theylearned to share?” you indignantly respond.Jesus is wondering the same thing about us.

Playground Drivers
by Donna Marie Merritt
This morning someone pulled out in front of me. I slammed on mybrakes and beeped. In response, the woman slowed to a crawl. At the first stop sign, she sat there, and sat, and sat. When it becameclear that she thought she was being funny, I beeped to let her knowplaytime was over. I had to get to work. This funny, funny personstuck her arm out the window and displayed an obscene gesture.Guess she showed me!All she showed me was that she is a jerk on the road. Our streets arelike a playground with bullies who cut in front of you to get to the slidefirst. Other kids hog the swings; they move slowly, dragging their feet, refusing to let you have a turn. And then there are the reckless oneswho run wildly about and seem surprised when they bump into you.Let’s play by the rules.Rule Number One: Don’t be a bully. Take turns. Wait for that car toactually go by before pulling out. Accidents happen because peoplesay, “I think I can make it.”Rule Number Two: Don’t be a road hog. When you look into yourrearview mirror at that one-lane road behind you and see half adozen cars backed up because you don’t know quite where you’regoing or because you’re in no hurry so you’ve decided to go underthe speed limit, pull over. Let the cars pass and then you can takeyour Sunday drive again.Rule Number Three: Don’t be reckless. You may think you own theroad, but…Surprise! You don’t. Pay attention. Accidents that destroylives are most often caused by drivers who aren’t 100% focused onactually driving. This includes people who drink and drive.I’m tired of playground drivers. Grow up.
