The Microbiological and Chemical Exposure Assessment Research Division (Cincinnati,Ohio) of the National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL), Office of Research and Development(ORD) at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is seeking a recent BS/BA graduate toprovide services under a contractual agreement to assist in conducting
in-vitro
bioaccessibilityresearch on the arsenic found in dietary matrices. This research will be conducted on a chemicalform specific basis. Specifically, the student contractor will routinely utilize an enzymatic extractor,a microwave digestor, a liquid chromatograph and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometerto determine chemical form specific arsenic concentrations in dietary samples. The studentcontractor will be responsible for maintaining a scientific notebook documenting the sample weightsand the nature of the extraction conditions utilized. The student contractor will be responsible formaintaining instrument analysis logs and importing data sets into Excel spreadsheets for further dataevaluation. The student contractor will also be responsible for preparing both oral and writtenpresentations which summarize the research findings.Prospective students must have recently (within the last two years) completed a BS or BAprogram majoring in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or a related field at an accreditedcollege/university. The student will be expected to have an understanding of ion chromatography,liquid chromatography, a working knowledge of mass spectrometric detection, and be familiar withbasic laboratory health and safety.This contract is projected to begin, depending upon the availability of the selected studentcontractor, on or about February, 2008 and end in one year, with an option to continue an additionalyear. It is anticipated that the student contractor will/may work up to 30 hours per week not toexceed 1612 hours in the base year and 1612 hours in the optional period. The majority of the work will be Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The duty location is theMicrobiological and Chemical Exposure Assessment Research Division, Chemical ExposureResearch Branch, 26 W. Martin Luther King Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45268. Work will be primarilyperformed in a laboratory.The hourly rate is commensurate with the minimum required level of education andexperience. The 2007 pay rate is $15.50; the pay rate for this contract will be adjusted when the 2008rates are available. Student contractors will be paid the basic hourly rate only for the number of hoursworked and do not receive overtime premium for any hours worked beyond a 40-hour week. Studentcontractors do not accrue leave or holiday benefits and are not paid for any non-work days, regardlessof the reason. Federal, State, Local, and Social Security taxes will not be withheld; studentcontractors are responsible for reporting income to authorities and paying all taxes.
