Generic Name: Neutral human insulin


Indications: Treatment of diabetes mellitus for the control of hyperglycemia.
Drug Classification: Antidiabetics
Mechanism of Action: Increases glucose transport across muscle ad fat cell membranes
to reduce glucose level. Helps convert glucose to glycogen; triggers amino acid
uptake and conversion to protein in muscle cells; stimulates triglyceride
formation and inhibits release of free fatty acids from adipose tissue; and
stimulates lipoprotein lipase activity, which converts circulating lipoproteins to
fatty acids.
Dosage: By SC or IV inj. Dosage according to individual requirements. Duration approx.
5 hours.
Special Precaution: Transferring from other insulins. Emotional distress, infection,
pregnancy.
Pregnancy Risk: B
Adverse Reaction: Lipodystrophy, insulin resistance. Local and generalized allergic
reactions.
Contraindications: Hypoglycemia
Form: Injection (human) 100 units/ml, Injection (bovine) 100 units/ml
Nursing Responsibilities:
 Insulin is drug of choice to treat diabetic during pregnancy.
 Dosage is always prescribed in USP units.
 Monitor patient closely.
 Make sure that patient knows that insulin relief pain but does not cure disease.
 Instruct patient to avoid vigorous exercise.
 Teach patient to avoid alcohol use.
 Advice patient to wear or carry medical identification at all times.
 Store insulin at 2-8 degrees Celcius.
