Description

The purpose of this article is to describe the dynamics of radicalism among the Indonesian Moslems. In Indonesia, radicalism is mostly induced by the Moslems’ depressed and threatened feeling due to their being marginalized in political life and individually brainwashed by the religion teachers through dogmatic teaching. From group processes point of view, Islamic radicalism groups tried to enlist people to their groups as they believe that this recruiting effort will unify Islam and the country. The author proposes his opinion that the radical groups in order to be exist and as they were unable to find alternatives for their struggle, they provoked terrorism. Reasoned action theory (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) and frustration–aggression theory (Dollard, Doob, Miller, Mowerer, & Sears, 1939) in the field of social psychology are relevant to analyze the Moslems’ radical behavior. The author suggested that Islamic radicalism needs appropriate channels for their concerns (for example, through mass media); however, it also needs to be sharply distinguished from terrorism and violence for Islam means "natural law", "safe", and "peace".
