Obedience
The great apostle Paul wrote, “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord”(Colossians 3:20). And again, Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor yourfather and mother’ (this is the first commandment with a promise), ‘that it may be well with you andthat you may live long on the earth’” (Ephesians 6:1-3).Obedience is defined as the act or state of yielding willingly to the control or command of others;submission to authority or law; dutifulness. The willingness to conform to the right and wishes of those is authority is a most desirable qualityfor any individual to possess. The jails and prisons of our land are filled with individuals who donot possess this quality. Those who learn early in life the importance of proper respect for law andorder will usually throughout adult life cheerfully conform to the rules and regulations which societyhas established for the common good of all. Obedience in its broader sense means more thancarrying out the request of the parent or the command of a superior officer; it means cheerfully andgladly executing promptly the task we are expected to perform. The person who learns in early childhood to respect the rights of society and the wishes of otherpeople will be most happy in the performance of those duties which are certainly going to fall tothis or her lot during life. Those who prosper most and who enjoy life to the fullest degree will bein constant obedience to the rules, laws and regulations of society, nature, and above all, God.Thos who disobey or break the rules and laws will be unhappy and will suffer hardships whichmight otherwise have been avoided. We cannot hope to accomplish much in this life if we do notconform to and obey the rules of the society in which we live. The father of the great Carthaginiangeneral, Hannibal, said, “My son Hannibal will be a great general because of all my soldiers hebest knows how to obey.”If we learn to obey our parents, teachers, and the laws of our country, it will be easier for us toobey the Lord, and to become great soldiers in the battle against sin. There is nothing moreimportant than this as we can read in 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9, “…when in flaming fire, inflictingvengeance upon those who do not know God and upon those who do not obey the gospel of ourLord Jesus. They shall suffer the punishment of eternal destruction and exclusion from thepresence of the Lord and from the glory of His might.”We read in Hebrews, regarding Jesus our Savior, “Although he was a Son, he learned obediencethrough what he suffered; and being made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation to allwho obey Him” (Hebrews 5:8-9). Even Christ the Son of God, was obedient; how careful weshould be to make this wonderful trait a part of our life.
