NBC NEWS WASHINGTON"VIRGINIA GOVERNOR DEBATE"INTERVIEW WITH TERRY MCAULIFFE & KEN CUCCINELLICORRESPONDENT: CHUCK TODDPRODUCER: EDE JERMINMEDIA ID: LIVE FEED19:00:00:00 (OFF-MIC CONVERSATION)CHUCK TODD:19:02:39:00 Mr. McAuliffe, by virtue of an earlier coin toss, you will go first with your two minute openingstatement. Go ahead.TERRY MCAULIFFE:19:02:45:00 Well, thank you, Chuck. And thank you to theFairfax Chamber for hostin' us tonight and to allVirginians, who are watching at home. And Iwould like to recognize my wife Dorothy who ishere with me tonight. For the last two decades,we have been raising our five children here inFairfax County. The choice in this race issimple, which candidate is going to govern fromthe mainstream, work with both parties, and focuson those economic issues that Virginians are
concerned about.19:03:13:00 During this campaign, I have proposed commonsensesolutions on issues of education, transportation, and workforce development. I've also been proudto earn the support of so many prominentRepublicans, many of whom have never supported aDemocrat before. The bipartisan coalition thatwe have assembled during this campaign reflectsthe approach that I would take as governor, following in the successful model of Mark Warner.19:03:41:00 Just a few weeks ago, my opponent changed hiscampaign staff and his tactics. Probably becausehe was concerned that a number of Republicanswere no longer supporting his campaign. Theresult has been a sharp increase in the mostpersonal of attacks. They've been calleddeceitful and false by the press.19:04:00:00 So I expect more of those kinds of attackstonight. But what Virginians do expect from us
is to hear how we are going to bring folkstogether in Richmond. With the Department ofDefense drawing down its overall spending and nowwith the sequestration, the next governor willface serious economic headwinds. We cannotafford the next four years in Richmond to be likethe last four in Washington.19:04:26:00 Gridlock, driven by the Tea Party, is once againrisking a government shutdown that would bedevastating to the Virginia economy. InVirginia, we have a strong record of workingtogether, Democrats and Republicans. And withthe challenges that lie ahead, we must embracethe tradition of mainstream solutions. We needthose solutions now more than ever.CHUCK TODD:19:04:50:00 Thank you.TERRY MCAULIFFE:19:04:51:00 And that is what I look forward to talking withyou tonight.
