Shelton International College is proud to announce itspartnership with Staffordshire University (SU), UnitedKingdom (UK), making it now possible for those studying atShelton to get a British education on local shores, and atlocal cost.
degree with the exact British university curriculum, according to British university standards. We know it is very expensive to study overseas, so this is a wayfor us to bring overseas education to the students. It really does create opportunities that didn’t exist in the past.”Expounding the merits of a British education, he added that it does have the reputation of “being perhaps, among the best in the world”, as all tertiaryinstitutions in the UK are reviewed and evaluated by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education, an independent body that provides anintegrated quality assurance service for higher education in UK.This means that a British university student would have his examination paper marked by not only one, but two members of his own faculty. On top of that, his examination script is also subject to checks from an external examiner at another British university. “That makes sure that the standard of a degree fromone university is comparable to that from another university,” explained Professor Reynolds. Students who wish to get some international exposure can opt to transfer to SU’s campus in Stoke-on-Trent, England, during the course of their studies. And they have every good reason to; for the university boasts of a vibrant social life, as well as a relatively low cost of living as compared to many othercities in the UK. Apart from having a well-serviced international student centre, a team of English language lecturers is also available on campus to providestudents with free support in their language and study skills. With regards to future plans, Professor Reynolds mentioned the possibility of opening an SU office at Shelton to provide student services to those whowish to further their studies at SU. Shelton is also looking at expanding the number of SU courses that are being taught locally, in addition to its currentofferings of Mass Communication, Business Management, International Business Management, Marketing Management, Human Resource Managementand Travel, Tourism & Hospitaly Management.
“We provide opportunities to get a British university degree with the exact British university curriculum.... It really does createopportunities that didn’t exist in the past.
According to Professor Peter J Reynolds, Director of the International Office at SU,the partnership was one built on common objectives and shared values between thetwo schools – one of which was student support – which SU identified in Shelton.Said Professor Reynolds, “We provide opportunities to get a British university

Bridging Cultural Differences
This is just one example of the many success stories of the Overseas Study Programme (OST)launched by Shelton College International. A few years ago, this programme was initiated to hostinternational students from various parts of China, Korea, Thailand and Indonesia to get a taste of campus life in Shelton College International, as well as vibrant Singapore. This July and August, Shelton proudly hosted Ngoc Diep for seven days. The excited Vietnameseyouth stayed in the hostel with fellow Shelton students and even attended classes with her newfound friends. One of the subjects she was exposed to was Tourism. During the Hotel Managementclass, she enjoyed the interclass activity and was delighted to be paired up with a fellow country-man, “I was paired up with another Vietnamese girl.
We had to role-play as the receptionist andguest! The teacher complimented us. I really loved it!”
Shelton definitely does not believe in the maxim of “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. For every programme, our school ensures that thevisiting students learn - not only through class activity, but also through excursions and site visits.Miss Christine Lee, Assistant Manager (Business Development) of the OST revealed, “The students from Korea Cheju Tourism College were here for amonth. 70% of their time was spent learning the English Language and Social programme and the other 30% was dedicated to getting exposed to theexciting and multi-racial culture and lifestyle of Singapore.”Ngoc Diep, was fortunate to have the opportunity to be a spectator at the National Day Parade and to feel the patriotic spirit of Singaporeans. Sheexclaimed, “There were helicopters drawing heart shapes in the sky, fireworks at Marina Bay and the people were dancing and cheering!”According to Miss Lee, there are some very exciting programmes lined up for Shelton students in the future, such as getting hosted by schools abroad.Meanwhile, she is initiating a similar student-exchange programme by arranging for students from the West to learn and benefit from Singapore’sdynamic culture – a blend of strong Asian flavour with a tinge of Westernisation. This will have twin benefits for our students as well and those from the West. “OST benefits students by making them more knowledgeable, open-minded and independent,” said Miss Lee.

International Immersion
In the scene

Well done, girls!
Being a student at Shelton International College has its advantages – one of which is the opportunity to benefit from a rich cultural experience, thanks toits body of international students hailing from countries such as Thailand, Myanmar and China, to name a few.And what better way was there to celebrate this diversity than to showcase the national costumes of those countries to our local community, which ourstudents did when they recently took part in the Radin Mas International Cultural Night, as well as the Radin Mas 43rd National Day Observance Ceremony– both of which were organised by the People’s Association.Apart from that, our students also had the opportunity to interact and get to know each other better through activities organised by the school, such as abarbeque session, a trip to the Istana, as well as a basketball match. After all, what is campus life if not for meaningful activities that build up students’leadership and social skills?
