Foreword
Increasingly, colleges and universities are expected to take a more proactiveapproach to managing their environmental impacts across a range of disciplines, such as energy and waste management, transportation, and procurement. In lieu of the traditional model --delegation of specific duties to existing members of staff –institutions of higher education are hiringindividuals with broad knowledge andexpertisein environmental sustainability (often called “greening”) issues. For thisreason, the number of sustainability professionalsin thehigher education sector hassteadily risenover the past few years. The Campus Consortium for EnvironmentalExcellence (C2E2)has recently formed a Sustainability Work Group and is working tosupport thesenew professionals by providingguidance and peer networks. To advance these efforts, weare proudto offerthis practical guide for the benefit of colleges and universities yet to appointa sustainability professional. Directors of Environmental, Health and Safety, as well asother universities and collegesadministratorshaveapproached my colleagues andmemany times in the past twoor three years for details about
how
,
who
and
what
they should do to appoint asustainability professional. In fact, we are asking similarquestions right now at myinstitution, Boston University. It’s encouragingto note thatthe questionof
why”
is nolonger being asked. Many administrations are now recognizing the need, but areuncertain of how toproceed. This guide isdesigned to help you hire a sustainabilityprofessionalor, for thosesmaller institutions without the resources to hire a full-time dedicated professional, identify candidates within your institution that can embrace the roles andresponsibilities of a sustainability professional. The guide has been developedbythe Sustainability Workgroup of the C2E2inpartnership with the Environmental Association forUniversities and Colleges(EAUC)of the United Kingdom, who are the original authors of this guide. As time goes by weintend to review and update this guide to ensure current best practice continues to bedocumented.I am delighted that our strategic partnership with the EAUC and greening/sustainability associationsin the U.S. isable to provide support and guidance for those of you working in this sector now and inthe future.Peter Schneider,President, Campus Consortium for Environmental Excellence
