Starts from the mouth but the 1st major part where it starts is at the esophagus
ESOPHAGUS

CRICOPHARYNGEUS MUSCLE

First muscle that contracts to propel the food down
GASTROESOPHAGEAL SPHINCTER
o
A physiologic sphincter (there is no actual action)
o
 Thickening of the circular muscle and not a valve
o
Allows GERD to happen
Blood supply:
o
Origin in thoracic area: DESCENDING AORTA
o
Origin in cervical area: INFERIOR CAROTID ARTERY
o
Origin in abdominal area: LEFT GASTRIC ARTERY
 T10 pierces the diaphragm
STOMACH
Parts: Fundus, Body, Antrum, Pylorus
PYLORIC SPHINCTER
o
 True anatomic sphincter
o
Left upper quadrant
o
Greater curvature more on left
o
Lesser curvature more on right
o
Grinds the food
o
3 types of cells:
Parietal –
HCl, Intrinsic Factor
Chief –
pepsinogen
Mucus –
mucus coating (protecting mucosa of stomach)
INTRINSIC FACTOR
o
Needed for absorption of vit B12
In the ileum (not in the stomach)
o
For maturation of RBC
May cause anemia if there is lack of IF
