Over the past six years as I have observed and reported on this little community, it’s amazing and slightlysad how much argument and unrest there is within many of the factions that weave the fabric of theMarina. Such is the reality of people and how we all interact I guess, but it’s in such contrast to what weall have in common – a love for the outdoors and the tranquility of the boating lifestyle. There is quitepossibly no place on earth better than a boat to have an uninterrupted conversation, but within the wallsof so many clubs and organizations that promote boating, drama prevails. In the world of volunteer organizations, personalities clash and egos collide. Board members meet, rulesare created, judgments are made, people are banned or thrown out and personal wars are waged...and forwhat? “For the greater good of the collective,” you say. “Okay,” I counter. “As long as you promise withall that is true and pure that your position is not based on a prejudice or personal motivation.”My point is that I believe that groups of people can get along if there is a clear structure and honest statedaim in a given collective. Good leadership must remain open minded and dedicated to the identity of theirclub or organization and that identity needs to be very clearly de
ned. Arguments most often revolvearound misunderstandings rather than core principle differences and its leadership that is burdened withdeciphering what’s what.So I beg that you all go and do what is most unnatural and uncomfortable...politely listen and if necessary...compromise.
