period of the year. Thispattern of behaviorclearly parallels behaviorduring the period of mourning following theloss of a family member. The motivating ideabehind this is that ouremotions are oftencontrolled by the thingsthat we do andultimately bring about asense of mourning andloss. The extent to whichwe are able to followthese patterns of behavior will determinethe extent to which wewill experience thedestruction of ourTemple.Because of the historicalimplications of this timeof year
marriages
areforbidden during theThree Week period. Itseems that theprohibition stems notfrom the change inpersonal status, butrather from thecelebration which is anintrinsic part of themarriage. Therefore
celebratory parties
would also beinappropriate during thethree weeks. There areseveral different customsconcerning listening to
music
during the threeweeks. Although there isno prohibition to be foundin the Shulchan Aruch, thisis because music ingeneral was frowned uponafter the destruction of theBeit HaMikdash. Itsprohibition during thethree weeks might be seenBeginning with the17

Accordingly,we relive thishistorical experienceby adopting certainsymbolic behaviorcommonplace to astate of mourning. Aswe approach that finaldestruction oursymbolic mourninggrows morepronounced. It ismost intense on theday of Tisha B’avitself.Jewish Law andtradition haveestablished a patternof behavior for this

as either an intrinsic part of our mourning forthe Beit HaMikdash, or as an extension of theprohibition of celebratory events. Many permitmusic for a functional purpose, such asexercise or staying awake while driving (a goodnight’s sleep is also recommended).
Wearingof new garments
which would require theblessing of shehecheyanu is avoided during thethree weeks (buying them is permitted). Thisis because that blessing
allowed us to reachthis time, a blessing inappropriate for thistime of national calamity.
New fruits
andthe like whose eating would also requirethe blessing of shehecheyanu, are noteaten until Shabbat when a shehecheyanumay be recited. New clothing purchasedduring the week may also be worn onShabbat. In keeping with the customs of mourning,
hair cutting
is avoided duringthe three weeks, and there are many whorefrain from
 shaving
as well.Rosh Chodesh Av ushers in the periodknown as the
nine days
. Following thedictate of the Talmud which specifies thatrejoicing is suspended when the month of Av begins, the
eating of meat and drinking of wine
are avoided during thistime. In Jewish tradition meat and winehave always been associated withcelebrations and therefore, with theexception of Shabbat or a festive mealassociated with a mitzvah (Brit Milah, siyum, etc.), these foods are now avoided.Additionally the avoidance of meat andwine bring to mind the sacrifices whichwere ended with the destruction of theTemple. Of course, meat and wine arepermitted on Shabbat. This applies even tokiddush being made when Shabbat is

accepted early, and to havdala at the end of Shabbat. The custom is to either give thewine from havdala to a child who is not yetold enough to appreciate mourning, but oldenough to require a bracha on the wine, orto use grape juice. The Shulchan Aruchrecords that
bathing
is prohibited during thenine days. Since this refers to a time whenbathing was done at a bath house and tookon certain elements of a social event, modern authorities permit washing forpurposes of cleanliness. Showers during thistime period should be shorter and coolerthan usual. There are many people whoavoid the pleasure of swimming during thesenine days unless it is done for medicalreasons or in order to remove perspiration ordirt.
Freshly laundered garments
shouldnot be worn during the nine days.In keeping with the theme of increasedmourning, the Shulchan Aruch prohibits
building and planting for pleasure
. This isunderstood today to refer to decorating(painting, wallpapering, etc.) andlandscaping. Necessary house repairs andlawn maintenance are permitted.
