hair cutting
is avoided duringthe three weeks, and there are many whorefrain from
shaving
as well.Rosh Chodesh Av ushers in the periodknown as the
nine days
. Following thedictate of the Talmud which specifies thatrejoicing is suspended when the month of Av begins, the
eating of meat and drinking of wine
are avoided during thistime. In Jewish tradition meat and winehave always been associated withcelebrations and therefore, with theexception of Shabbat or a festive mealassociated with a mitzvah (Brit Milah,siyum, etc.), these foods are now avoided.Additionally the avoidance of meat andwine bring to mind the sacrifices whichwere ended with the destruction of theTemple. Of course, meat and wine arepermitted on Shabbat. This applies even tokiddush being made when Shabbat is

accepted early, and to havdala at the end of Shabbat. The custom is to either give thewine from havdala to a child who is not yetold enough to appreciate mourning, but oldenough to require a bracha on the wine, orto use grape juice. The Shulchan Aruchrecords that
bathing
is prohibited during thenine days. Since this refers to a time whenbathing was done at a bath house and tookon certain elements of a social event,modern authorities permit washing forpurposes of cleanliness. Showers during thistime period should be shorter and coolerthan usual. There are many people whoavoid the pleasure of swimming during thesenine days unless it is done for medicalreasons or in order to remove perspiration ordirt.

building and planting for pleasure
. This isunderstood today to refer to decorating(painting, wallpapering, etc.) andlandscaping. Necessary house repairs andlawn maintenance are permitted.
