The first instrumental blues songs were recorded in 1913.
The blues originated in the days of the African slave trading.
They were born in the North Mississippi delta.
The blues have influenced almost every type of music, including rock, jazz, folk and country.
During the 1920s, the blues became very popular.
The first vocal blues song was recorded by Mamie Smith in 1920. It wacalled ‘Crazy Blues’.
Some famous early blues artists are Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John LeeHooker and Howlin’ Wolf.
The music was popularised around 1911 by a black composer called W. C. Handy.

Some early blues musicians, such as ‘Blind Lemon Jefferson’, were actually blind. Later artists, like ‘Blind Willie Dunn’, simply liked the history associated with the word.

The real name of ‘Howlin’ Wolf’ is Chester Arthur Burnett. He was given his nicknamebecause of his powerful voice.
Lyrically, verses of early blues songs usually consisted of a single line of four-barsrepeated twice, with a third rhyming line, such as:Woke up this morning with the blues all in my bed Yes, I woke up this morning with the blues all in my bed Fixed my breakfast, the blues all in my bread
B.B. King invented the concept of lead guitar in the 1940s. It is now an important part of rock music.

In 1930, the blues musician, Leadbelly, was convicted and jailed for attempted murder. Hissentences were commuted because of his musicianship.

In the 1960’s, bands such as the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds andFleetwood Mac ‘discovered’ the blues and made it widely popular.
More recent blues musicians are Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray.

It used to be said that if you were anaspiring bluesman and you stood at thecrossroads on a moonless night, youcould sell your soul and become a great blues guitar player.
