Ex-Erok, Mutara and Pesi
The Ex-Erok fence upgrade has been completed and so far the number of fence breakages hasgone down from 16 in March to 9 in April(
). The community is currently planning onfence security. LWF, LEP, KWS and the ADC have planned a rapid response team to be based atADC. It is expected the community teams will cooperate with the KWS rangers and the LEP teamon surveillance and rapid response to deter fence breakers. The Pesi fence section still faces a lot of challenges, especially from pastoralists. We haveengaged the pastoralist community in the fence management team and over the last month, weobtained a detailed report on who was responsible for the fence breaks. The report claimed thechildren were the culprits, and that they were sent by parents who did not want to be arrested byADC for grazing. A meeting is planned for 18
th
May to address these issues and arrive at aworking solution.Community members are currently taking part in replacing broken fence sections but due to lack of skills, they are not doing it properly. There is need to provide basic training to front linefarmers.
