Cosmos Tour Review / Survival GuideFocus on Italy & Paris with London ExtensionTour 4875 0616
OVERVIEW:
The main reason that I’m writing this review is because when Ifirst looked for reviews of this tour online, I couldn’t find much. I only found onecomplete review, which was only one person’s opinion. I was hoping to gather differentopinions of people with different experiences so I knew what to expect. I was alsohoping to gain more information on specifics of each day, as well as more details on theincluded excursions and the optional excursions. I wanted to go on my trip withsomewhat of a plan to use the limited time in Europe as wisely as possible. In this review I will 1) describe each day, 2) review our tour director, 3) reviewour driver, 4) review the included and optional excursions, 5) review the airline, 6)review our hotels, 7) and describe things I wish I had done or done differently. My wife and I kept journals of every day, and I would highly recommend doingthe same. There will be plenty of time riding on the coach, and it’s so nice to recallsomething you forgot because you have it written down; kind of jogs a memory thatwould have otherwise been lost. So this review will be pretty extensive because of the journal entries. Feel free to copy and paste this and customize it to your liking, but please bring it along on your trip as a guide. I did the same with the only other review I found, and it was very helpful knowing what to expect.Even if you didn’t do this specific tour, you’ll find plenty of information on theoptional excursions that are included on the many other tours.
Day 1, Saturday, June 14, 2008BOARD YOUR OVERNIGHT TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT
The first day is a traveling day, an overnight flight that left Philadelphia at 9:00pmand was supposed to arrive in London Heathrow at 12:00pm the next day. However, dueto weather at night in Philly, there was a bunch of re-routed airline traffic, so we didn’tleave the runway until 10:30pm, which reduced our time in London that first day.
BRITISH AIRWAYS:
We used British Airways, and I would highly recommendusing them over any U.S. carrier. It’s sad to say for the U.S. companies, but the customer service on a foreign carrier is so much nicer: no fees for checked baggage, one hot andone cold meal, drinks of anything at any time, including alcohol, personal entertainmentin a touch-TV screen on the seat in front of you, adequate staff and organization at theairport check-in desk, etc. Our delay was not BAs fault, but other than that, everythingwas smooth! The nice thing with BA is that you can check-in online by entering your passportand personal information ahead of time, choose your seats, and print your tickets. Allyou have to do at the airport is drop off the luggage at the fast baggage line (much shorter

than the normal line) and go through security. The airport check-in and security onlytook 15 minutes total!
Day 2, Sunday, June 15, 2008ARRIVAL IN LONDON, ENGLAND.LONDON HEATHROW:
We arrived through customs, after filling out a smallwhite card with our names and occupations and waiting in a line for 30-45 minutes. There will be two sets of lines, one for U.K. residents and the other for U.S. citizens.Make sure you check which line you are waiting in, because it can be rather long.Baggage was already waiting for us after we got through customs. We exited the terminaland found the Cosmos representative dressed in a bright red outfit. Had to look around alittle bit, but she was easy to spot.We had to wait for people from other tours and then we all gathered outside for ashuttle bus. The shuttle bus ride was not favorable. As a Cosmos tour, be prepared to bethe last hotel stop (out of four), and the traffic from the airport was also very busy. Whatmade it longer (1.5 to 2 hours to get to our hotel!) was the driver couldn’t find the seconddrop-off (circled some streets which lost 10-15 minutes) AND he had to take a bathroom break at the third hotel while my wife and I waited in the shuttle bus (another 10 minutedelay)! Ridiculous! It’s not like we were in a hurry or anything after being awake for 20+ hours! There were 13 people on the shuttle, aged from 10 to 80 (one woman wassitting in a wheelchair waiting for the shuttle, although she got up a little slowly when itwas time to go). I honestly couldn’t believe someone with limited mobility was doing a busy tour.
NOVOTEL LONDON ST. PANCRAS:
Anyways, the Novotel London St.Pancras on Euston Rd. was the best hotel we stayed at. The staff was very friendly andthe breakfast was awesome (more on that later). I think Cosmos wanted to give anawesome first impression to think that you’ll be staying at hotels like this for the wholevacation, which is very misleading. The room was very neat and clean, but a little smallcompared to U.S. standards (but everything is smaller and compact in Europe). There isa refrigerator in this hotel. Even as a married couple, you will be put in a room with twotwin beds, and sometimes they will be shoved together, but there will still be two separate beds. All the rooms will be non-smoking. But, the London hotels were the only placesthat had irons inside the rooms. I’m not sure if the other hotels had irons and you just hadto request it, but that seemed an annoyance to me. I wanted to spend more time in thecities than sitting around waiting for an iron to appear. So be prepared to wear a lot of wrinkled clothing for the rest of the trip.
THE ORIGINAL TOUR:
Since we got to town late, there were only a fewCosmos optionals that were available, but my wife and I walked into town on our own. Ittook us about 30-40 minutes to walk down to the Trafalgar Square area. We went therefirst because we wanted to do the Original Tours bus tour (www.theoriginaltour.com).Each ticket was 22£ (about $44.00 per adult). Everything was so expensive because of the very weak U.S. economy, which was a drag. Anyway, the tour was worth it, becausethey have multiple bus lines, some with commentary, and you can get on and off whenever you want. Plus, it includes a Thames River cruise, which we did. We picked

up the cruise at the docking area near Big Ben and took it to the Tower of London. It wasnice to go under the many bridges and see the sights from the river. We didn’t use the Underground (Tube), because we wanted to see the city as wewalked around, but I’m sure it wouldn’t be that confusing. My wife and I used the Metro(subway) in Paris, and that was pretty easy. So, if you want to go many places in one day,and you don’t want to do the Original Tours bus tour, I think the Tube has one-day passesthat would definitely be worth it. We were going to one or the other, but settled on the bus tour because we could sit down for an extended period of time and have someone tellus about the sights. However, towards the end (the busses don’t run all day) the Londontraffic was getting heavy, so we were tied up a little bit to get to the last stop (they don’tallow you to get off early before the stop, even though many people were asking to getoff).
DAY 1 / 2 REGRETS:
If I would do Day 1 / 2 again, I would add a day or two before the “start” of the trip so that you have more time in London, other than just gettingthere on Day 2 and have the remainder of a jet-lagged day in the city. You can requestthat through whomever you book your Cosmos tour. There’s so much to do in London, and would definitely like to return to visit the numerous sites. So we maximized our time in London as much as we could without being overlytired. We were also very hungry and thirsty as we were walking around, but we couldn’t buy anything from a vendor because we didn’t have any U.K. currency (we grabbed plenty of Euros before we left, but no pounds), and all the banks and exchange placeswere closed on a late Sunday afternoon/evening. So I would recommend bringing some pounds from the airport or from your U.S. bank before you fly over to London. We hadto wait to go to a restaurant later in the day to charge our meal and beverages.
CREDIT CARDS:
Check your credit card company if they charge a conversionfee for the currency, and maybe ask if they could waive it because you’ll be Europe for awhile and you’ll be using their card exclusively (and a lot!). We used Capital One, andthey do not charge anything extra to convert currency; just trying to save you a couple of extra bucks.
Day 3, Monday, June 16, 2008LONDON-BRUSSELS, BELGIUMBREAKFAST:
We had to wake up at 6am because to pack the luggage onto the bus, we needed our large luggage outside of our hotel room doors by 6:45am. We wentdown to breakfast, which was the ultimate and best part of the hotel. It was the best breakfast we had on our entire trip, but we didn’t know it at the time. Luckily, we ate alot. They had scrambled eggs, sausages, cereal, lunchmeat, cheeses, variety of fruit, yogurt, waffles, bread/toast, muffins, bagels, and much more.
TRIP TO DOVER / CALAIS:
After filling ourselves, we went to the tour coachthat left in front of the hotel at 8:30am, heading for the port of Dover, England to take aferry over to Calais, France and then a bus to Brussels, Belgium. We had to switchcoaches at a rest stop, because our driver broke off the passenger side mirror on a streetsign in London. We weren’t delayed too much, it was actually quite funny. The driver had a few passengers help him hold the mirror in place while he used electrical tape tofasten it to the bus. Such an adventure!
