 July 2009
Dear Editor,Once again the City of Staunton has issued a Water Quality Report stating thatfluoridated water is safe to drink. The report also claims that fluoride is a“Water additive which promotes strong teeth.”A growing list of legal, medical, dental, scientific and environmentalprofessionals have challenged the validity of these two statements and arecalling for an end of fluoridation. Their reasoning is succinctly explained in theDVD “Professional Perspectives on Water Fluoridation.” It is now available forviewing on line athttp://www.fluoridealert.org/ Staunton fluoridates because the Virginia State Board of Health’s July 18, 2008Policy Statement says “…water fluoridation benefits everyone…proven safeand effective…endorsed by numerous…” etc. These are all statementspromulgated by the American Dental Association and their followers. Nomention of toxicity to infants, diabetics, those with kidney disorders, the elderlyor consumers of large amounts of water such as athletes and laborers. Nomention of the one percent of individuals that are expected to havedermatologic, gastro-intestinal and neurological reactions to fluoride withsymptoms such as eczema, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, epigastric distress, emesis and headache.
And finally,no mention of fluoride’s known mechanisms of action that are related to thedevelopment of cancer.
A prime example of why Christopher Bryson titled his book “The FluorideDeception” is now playing out here in Virginia. In 1980 the Virginia Departmentof Health asked their toxicologist Dr. Brian Dementi to review the availableliterature relating to the health effects of fluoride. His report “Fluoride inDrinking Water” presented studies showing evidence of fluoride inhibiting theimmune system and promoting tumor growth. He reported that many mayexperience symptoms such as skin eruptions, eczema, gastric distress, headache, weakness, etc. and have no idea that fluoride in the drinking watermay be the cause. He concluded, in part “With regard to fluoridation, thiswriter is of the opinion that the evidence of adverse health effects is of suchmagnitude…that it is inappropriate to say that fluoridation is a totally healthfuland safe practice for all.”Incredibly, the Virginia Department of Health has no record of Brian Dementi orhis work. His “missing” document has been found and can be read at
