Comic Strips as Political Literature
by
Vincent F.A. Golphin
7:00 pm. Tuesday, October 14, 2008 Greece Town Hall
From Aaron McGruder's controversial Boondocks comic strip throughGary Trudeau's Doonesbury, back to the 19th century beginnings of visualpunditry in daily newspapers, serial cartoons became a unique social commen-tary form. Familiar strips such as The Katzenjammer Kids, Steve Canyon, and Bee-tle Bailey are long-read sources of entertainment, but they are also propagandamedia. This program highlights major comic artists and explores the ideologiesbehind their use of language and pictures for cultural critique.

THANK YOU FORYOUR SUPPORT
Today the internet is awonderful resource for histori-ans and genealogists. Unfor-tunately some people view the web as their only resource for research. Imyself use the web almost daily and find it aninvaluable tool, but I realize it is only one of many tools available. Local libraries and histori-cal societies, like your Greece Historical Society, can sometimes serve as the only source for pri-mary documentation and local lore, as a major-ity of our collections are not available on theweb.Within the past few months our re-sources and records have helped the GreecePolice Dept., the Greece Volunteer Ambulance,Greece Olympia alumni, the Greece Post andthe Democrat & Chronicle, all of which havefound information useful to their research. Theinformation which we have in our files and ar-chives is available only because of our dedi-cated volunteer staff, donations of documents
and artifacts related to the Town’s history and
the financial support of neighbors like you.
THANK YOU
for your continued support,
Bill Sauers

D
espite poor weather prior to June 18 our 20th annual
Strawberry Festival
wasa successful social event. We are so fortunate and appreciative that the Townof Greece provides their huge tent to insure a rain free "picnic" area. To help defray addi-tional costs, 3 generous sponsors each gave us $100 donations. They are
Vay, Schleich &Meeson Funeral Home, The Original Char Broil Restaurant

and a new member,
realtorLucia McIntee.
A committee of 12 made decisions for all jobs, and volunteers, including many new workers, stepped forward to do all the work. Thank you to all of you. While all our costswere higher, we did not want to raise the price or decrease the size of our shortcakes. Also, we lost the Re-Max balloon ride and the $400-$500 which that provided. Because we served about 300 guests buthad planned on 500, ideas are being discussed to attract more guests in 2009. Happily, the Kiwanis FishingDerby for kids benefitted from our excess such as chips, soda, water, and ice.
Now we need your ideas.
What changes could be made to benefit the Strawberry Festival? Please call(225-7221), email(corintheditor@yahoo.com), or send in ideas such as day of the week? free entertainment?more or different food?
Please give us your thoughts.
Thank you,
Lorraine Beane

We’d like to see you and your friends in these pictures!

Museum Tours
Throughout the year we have many tours coming to our museum. This year, we had over 200 2nd graderseager to learn the history of the town in which they live. They are very interested in our one room school house and thekitchen. Most of the students (and some parents) don't know what some of the appliances are. Some guesses for thewashing machine are an ice cream maker or a boiling pot. The toaster intrigues them - especially when we tell them thatthere is nothing to let them know when the toast is done - you have to watch it!!!
In addition, we’ve had several Cub Scout packs, seniors from many area nursing homes and also a church group.
I personally would like to thank the many volunteers who have helped me. Without them we would not be able tofunction. They are:
Faye Cole, Linda Evans, Jack Heller, Lucia McIntee, Wilma Wheten, Renee Sanger, BettySmith, Carolyn Brewer and Lee Strauss.

We encourage the groups that visit to pass the word and remind
everyone
to visit our wonderful museum.
