The Town of Carbonear, nestled in a peaceful valley, is one of the first areas in North America visited by Europeans, having been mentioned in the records of Fishing Admirals in 1580. Carbonear has been known historically as the "hub of the bay." It is a service centre for the region and over the years, it has grown into the unofficial capital of the Baccalieu Trail. The Town offers a lifestyle second to none in Atlantic Canada. Friendly people, numerous amenities, and a relaxed pace of life, make Carbonear an ideal place to work, raise a family, or retire.
The town has won the Newfoundland Labrador Tidy Towns Award twice, and is known for its history, its peacefulness and its beauty. The extensive boardwalk and walking trails, preserved cultural heritage, educational facilities, and strong cultural life demonstrate the pride that citizens take in their town.
The Heritage District has a number of structures that have been elegantly restored. These include the Old Post Office, the Rorke Stores Museum and several Bed & Breakfasts, where visitors can experience first hand Carbonear’s historic charm.
