Community ACtion toolkit to
PREVENTFAMILY  VIOLENCE
People who want to help eliminate amily violencedo not need to be specialists or experts. It is a mission or all people in every community.
“New Zealand is praised for many things overseas, including its international peacekeeping, but the country  needs to work on achieving peace domestically. We need to focus for a while on the problems at home, and concentrate our world class skills on resolving these issues that are our nightmare in the otherwise beautiful and peace-loving country we live in.”
Dame Silvia Cartwright in her fnal addressas Governor General, August 2006

What happens in amilies aects our neighbourhoods, schools, workplaces and communities. The results o violence in amiliesspread right through society. As children grow up within, and becomeaccustomed to, an environment o violence new generations o NewZealanders bear the consequences.Family violence has ar-reaching social and economic costs. Violencecan undermine and destroy individuals’ sense o their own worth anda amily’s ability to look ater and support its members. It can lead toinjury, illness, death, and trauma. Lives are wasted and our country ispoorer or it in every way.Changing the attitudes and the behaviours that have allowed amilyviolence to continue is a priority or community action. Action to prevent, and ultimately eliminate, amily violence needs theco-ordinated eorts o committed individuals; community groups;leaders o civic, business and sporting enterprises; governmentagencies and politicians at local and national levels. It is work that will take time, patience, courageand positive energy. It’s about everyone playing their part and believingit can be done. Our reward will be a society where people are saein and outside their homes. Children will grow upin amilies that are respectul o each member andthe benets o violence-ree amily lie will nourishuture generations. The billions o dollars that nowgo towards dealing with amily violence can bedirected to positive programmes that enhanceopportunities or enriched and healthy lives.
