Sudah 8 bulan berlalu sejak
kemelesetan ekonomi bermula dan
warga Singapura secara keseluruhan
telah berjaya sebagai satu bangsa,
menangani krisis tersebut meskipun
terdapat kadar pemberhentian
kerja yang tinggi dan minggu
kerja yang lebih singkat. Ekonomi
sedang menunjukkan tanda-tanda
pemulihan dengan pakej $20.5b
yang telah dibentangkan oleh
pemerintah kita untuk membiayai
langkah-langkah seperti kredit
GST, rebet sewa dan utiliti, Kredit
Pekerjaan, program Peningkatan
Kemahiran dan skim insentif
pekerjaan.

Di Bukit Batok East, kami telah cuba
sedaya upaya untuk membantu
penduduk seperti peruntukan
bulanan bagi keluarga yang
memerlukan, bursari, dan biasiswa.
Kami juga tidak melupakan LUP
kerana kelompok peningkatan yang
terakhir sudah hampir siap. HDB juga
telah mencari penyelesaian yang
akan memanfaatkan blok yang tidak
mempunyai pelantar lif di setiap
tingkat.

Terima kasih kepada semua
penduduk atas sokongan padu
anda dan saya yakin kita akan
kekal bersatu untuk keluar daripada
kemelesetan semasa ini.

It has been eight months since our
economy went into a recession due
to the global economic crisis. We
have seen higher retrenchments and
shorter work weeks but, to our credit,
Singaporeans have done very well as
a people. We rallied quickly together
and focused on the core issues which
are jobs and securing help for those
in need.

So, while many countries are still
struggling to put together measures
to jumpstart their economy and
extend help to their citizens, in
January this year our Government
already rolled out a $20.5b package
to help companies stay afloat and
workers keep their jobs. One of
the reasons why we could move
so quickly is because we had
been prudent in the past. Our past
savings have enabled us to finance

these additional measures to help
Singaporeans weather the current
difficulties. Measures include GST
credits, rental and utilities rebates,
Jobs Credit, Skills Programme for
Upgrading and Resilience and
Workfare Incentive Scheme.

In Bukit Batok East, we have also
stepped up our efforts to reach
out to residents. In addition to the
national schemes, we also have
our own schemes such as providing
monthly provisions for needy families
as well as providing bursaries and
scholarships.

Our Lift Upgrading Programme is
going on smoothly and many of
you will enjoy a lift at your floor once
the latest round of upgrading is
completed. Residents in one of our
blocks with half landing would also

be able to enjoy lift upgrading as HDB has come out with a solution that will benefit residents.

I want to thank all residents for your
strong support and show of solidarity
in this time of crisis.

I am confident that we will remain
united and will be able to get out of
this recession even stronger.

This was truly an event that
allowed residents to know
more about the Indian
custom. Spectacular
programmes include Rangoli
/ Henna competition and
a wide variety of Indian
dances and musical
performances. The response
was good with over 350
residents participated. Mdm
Halimah Yacob was the
Guest of Honour.
