What’s on LGfL for Primary

Premium content and LA projects for e-learning

E-learning content on the London Grid for Learning (summer 2009)


The London Grid for Learning has created, bought or commissioned a range of software
focussed on supporting learning and teaching in the Primary sector.
Many London LAs have been involved in action research projects, involving classroom
teachers and supported by LGfL, which include the best and latest practice in using a
range of software and hardware across the curriculum.
The London Grid for Learning is also part of the National Education Network, bringing
together 10 grids which cover all the regions of England, each with its own unique content.

Foundation and Early Years
PB Bear (P)
LGfL PB Bear provides 5
online video stories and talking
books, with differentiated
activities based on Foundation
goals. The activities are also
mapped to the KS1 curriculum.
Produced in collaboration with
a team of teachers and
advisers from London schools,
It is the result of the LGfL
partnership with Pearson
Longman.
You can find it in the
Foundation as well as the KS1
Literacy, Numeracy and ICT
menus.
Each story contains a number
of differentiated activities
based on Foundation goals.
The activities are also mapped
to the KS1 curriculum.
You can find a summary of the
activities by selecting the
Activity menu button from the

Magic School from I-Board (P)


Choose a character, dress
them up and change their
appearance then visit one of
the play rooms for a variety of
EY-focused activities.
In this example, children can
explore the sounds of
instruments in the music room,
compose a performance and
play it on the music system on
the wall.

Literacy
Talking Stories 1 for KS1 from 2Simple (P)
Five online talking stories on
KS1 QCA topics (mainly
History and Geography). The
text is spoken out in a range
of languages and all stories
include activities for a range
of subjects.
The stories use Shockwave
v10; if they don’t load it will
be because your machine
has an older version.

Talking Stories 2: Multimodal teaching resources for key stage 2


This resource is in the KS2 Literacy
menu. It supports the renewed
framework for KS2 Literacy.
The ‘stories’ are Coleridge’s The
Ancient Mariner; Sherlock Holmes
in the Red-Headed League, the
forest scene from Midsummer’s
Night Dream, Food, and a co-
production with the Met around the
role of PCSOs.
Each is an incredibly rich resource,
supporting extensive work at KS2
Literacy, possibly up to 4 weeks in
some cases, with additional off-
computer resources for activities.

2Simple Talking Stories 3 (for KS1 and 2)

The third collection of talking
stories from 2Simple software in
collaboration with LGfL is now
available online for London
schools. This popular resource
has now been expanded with
familiar stories and
traditional tales from around the
world. Featured stories include:
Orpheus, A Trip in the Car, The
Wishing Tree, The Emperor and
his Advisor & The Parrots and the
Raja. One unique feature of the
new collection is the ability to write
and save your own stories online.

I-Board Literacy for key stage 1 (available in full by Sept 2009)
This resource is in the KS1 Literacy menu or directly at www.iboard.lgfl.net.

You can search by year and topic to find an activity to support KS1.
There are a limited number of activities at the moment, but will be arriving by the day with
a full complement by the autumn term

i-learn Speaking and Listening for KS1 and 2 (available autumn 2009)
Produced by Cambridge University Press this KS1 and 2 resource will be available inthe
autumn term
i-learn: speaking and listening has
been designed to support the first
four strands of the new Primary
Framework for literacy. It is highly
flexible and open-ended to allow for
easy integration into all areas of the
curriculum. It can be used as a
booster if children need support and
reinforcement of particular skills, as
part of a whole-school speaking and
listening solution, or integrated into
existing planning units - either in
literacy or in other curriculum areas..

Perform a Poem in collaboration with Michael Rosen – autumn term 2009


The ‘Perform-a-poem’ site will be a video-
uploading feature, along the lines of
Michael Rosen’s Poetry-Friendly mini-site:

Schools will use their LGfL teacher
usernames in order for teachers to upload
videos of their pupils’ performances of new
or out of copyright poems, subject to
satisfactory e-safe procedures. The site
will provide resources for teachers on
choosing and writing poems, performing,
filming, editing and uploading videos.

I-Board Numeracy (for KS1)

Multemaths for the renewed framework at KS2 (P)


Developed in conjunction with Anita
Straker and BEAM, Mult-e-Maths
offers flexible primary mathematics
software designed for whole class
teaching using an interactive
whiteboard. It promotes a range of
pedagogic approaches and the 600
activities in Mult-e-Maths draw on
different teaching strategies,
techniques and tools to ensure
progress for all.

Science
Virtual Experiments for KS1 (P)
Collins’ Virtual Experiments for
all Infant Years is up and
running on LGfL. You can find it
in the KS1 Science menu.
It covers all the units of QCA
Primary Science with structured
introductions, online
experiments and extension
activities. LGfL has added a
brief and straightforward guide
to support staff INSET and a
link to the BBC’s excellent
Science Clips website which
offer a complementary list of
individual activities if less
interactive and structured.

running on LGfL. You can find it
in the KS2 Science menus.
It covers all the units of QCA

Espresso ‘At Home’
The London Grid for Learning has reached a unique agreement with Espresso. Using our
‘single sign-on’ software, we can now offer access to the whole of Espresso content, at
home, for those teachers from schools who subscribe to Espresso. Go to any menu for a
KS1 or 2 core subject and select the ‘Espresso at home for teachers’ option. You will be
asked to enter you LGfL username and password before you can get access to the
Espresso content.

History
Holnet – History of London (O)
The Second World War
Using exclusive resources on London
and its people from the Imperial War
Museum, this covers Evacuation, the
Blitz, Shelters and Daily Life.
The downloadable teaching resources
include a Y6 activity on producing a
1940s class newspaper, a postcard
writing activity where pupils assume the
role of a recently-billeted evacuee and a
complete work booklet for pupils
covering the topic inY3/4.
Victorian Schools
Using records from the London
Metropolitan Archive – the official
archive of the London School Board
which ran schools in London from 1870
to 1905 – this section has a wealth of
visual and text resources on Schools,
Pupils, Subjects and Teachers. The
latter section includes a timeline of the
life of a Victorian teacher, Mr Arthur
Seer.

Virtual Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood (O)


A virtual visit to this popular
museum, using the arrow keys to
move around a selection of
objects.
Designed in collaboration with the
Museum’s education dept and a
KS1 AST, the visit includes online
activities to support the ‘Old Toys,
New Toys’ QCA unit.
Children can roam the exhibits
and pick their favourites to form a
booklet of their virtual visit.

Modern Foreign Languages (French and Spanish only)
Rigolo 1 and 2 for Primary French
This resource is now available online at
www.rigolo.lgfl.net
Rigolo is planned carefully so that non-specialist
and specialist language teachers can easily
follow a structured progression. It is a teacher-
led resource that combines engaging
characters, animated stories and activities and
helps children to move into Speaking and
Listening too. Classroom teachers will find that
the activities reflect their experiences with the
National Literacy Strategy.
Rigolo 1 includes several teaching and planning tools for the classroom:
• Scheme of work and mapping grids: a full medium term planning scheme for Rigolo 1, plus
correlation documents showing how Rigolo 1 meets the KS2 Framework for Modern
Languages and covers the language from the QCA scheme of work units and 5-14
guidelines requirements.
• Flashcards – Approximately 130 colour flashcard images with matching text captions to use
either electronically or printed out for classroom use.
• Worksheets – eight differentiated worksheets for each unit, providing further classroom
practice in reading, writing and speaking skills.
• Teacher’s notes – These are quick reference notes that are stored electronically.
• Certificates and portfolios – Certificates for pupils and teachers to track their progress
through Rigolo 1.
Vamos 1 and 2 from Espresso
Module 1 of Espresso’s resource for
KS2 Spanish, covering Greetings, In
School, the Alphabet, Numbers,
Days of the Week, Festivals and the
Weather.

RM Sonica Spanish (P)
Sonica Spanish is an innovative software
product commissioned by the DfES. Sonica
Spanish is designed to help teachers,
including modern foreign language
(MFL) specialists, bring Spanish language
teaching into their classrooms.

Under a unique agreement, LGfL is hosting


24 of its 240 activities as an online resource,
for home and school use.

RE, Citizenship and e-safety content on LGfL
Celebrating Us, Us Online and Who We Are (Premium content)

LGfL’s co-production with ROAR for KS2 and 3 is proving tremendously popular, both as a
Citizenship and as a cross-curricular resource.
There are now three units for KS3:
• Us Online which looks at the delicate balance between online safety and online
responsibility with separate units for KS1 and KS2
• What We Do which focuses on the rights, roles and responsibilities we all have as
citizens irrespective of our age
• Who We Are which looks at the issues of diversity focussing on identity,
stereotyping, discrimination and migration

Espresso Faiths Module (P)


Espresso’s highly visual and
engaging resources have won
awards and praise in equal amount.
Commissioned by LGfL, Espresso
Faiths looks at the six major world
faiths as we would find them in
London communities, with London
children explaining their faith
community to other London children.

LGfL has been working with the Ballet Boyz Contemporary Dance company (Michael
Nunn and William Trevitt) to produce online dance resources for all Key Stages.
There are three productions with Encore specially designed for KS2.

LGfL has commissioned a Primary PE unit
based on the theme of a collaborative
marathon. There will be KS1 and KS2
versions. The units were delivered in stages
over the summer term 2009.

‘Sharing Good Practice’ - LGfL and London LA projects
Unless otherwise stated, all of this content is open access. There is a common format:
• Each project will include model lessons, including full plans, resources used or
created and full curriculum mapping
• Where possible, examples of children’s work will be included

Whilst LGfL or the LEA involved retain the


copyright for all materials, the resources
are open for use within the educational
sector as long as there is no commercial

Using Audio Network in the Primary Classroom

Alexandra Junior and
Heston Infants schools
in Hounslow have tried
and tested a number of
different ways in which
the music files can be
used to support Literacy,
ICT and Personal,
Social and Emotional
Development, as well as
fun ways of using the
music files to help with
classroom and
behaviour management.
This project comes with full lesson plans, downloadable classroom resources and videos
of teachers explaining how they used this resource.

Islington - Assessing Primary ICT (O)
CEA@Islington has produced a complete
portfolio of pdf documents, exemplifying
through children's work the levels of
attainment in Primary ICT.
All four levels for all of the QCA units are
covered in a clear and accessible style, with
teacher comments added to the pupil’s work.
Find a link in both the KS1 and 2 ICT content
menus.
Schools will find this an invaluable aid in the
development of their own portfolios of pupil’s
work.

Harrow – Visual Literacy (O)


This excellent project highlights the work
of a group of ASTs, using TAG’s Digital
Blue, a cheap, robust digital camera.
Working with a range of classes from
schools at both KS1 and 2, Harrow has
produced some excellent examples of how
to use basic video cameras to engage
young pupils in producing innovative work.

London-Paris Links project

This is a joint British Council
and LGfL project, working
very closely with the director
for all Paris Primary schools.
So far 19 local authorities
and 40 schools have been
involved in the initial stages
of this project which supports
Primary MFL through direct
collaboration with Paris
schools. Schools in our two
world cities work together
using safe community areas
in the LGfL VLE to blog,
chat, email and podcast to
each other. If you are
interested, contact you LA’s
MFL adviser.
