Green Anarchy
Summer 2005.Edited by the GreenAnarchy Collective5/yr; P.O. Box 11331,Eugene, OR 97440.$18/yr, $4/sample.By Tim W. BrownEven though I've come to markedly different conclusions about politics and society, reading this magazine made me think hard about my beliefs. The product of a collective that billsitself as "anti-civilization,"
Green Anarchy
promotes individual freedom, radicalenvironmentalism and direct action against corporate culture.Certainly, civilization has its faults. It tends to reward the haves at the expense of thehave-nots. And its damage to the environment is regrettable at best and scandalous at worst. YetI'm not sure what the alternative is.
Green Anarchy
's contributors repeatedly praise the tribal model for organizing society. However, civilization is an
antidote
to tribalism, not vice versa. When you stop to consider thatconflicts in the Middle East and Africa (to name but two examples) are characterized in tribalterms, then you begin to see that what the world sorely needs is
more
civilization, not less.Better than any other contributor, Dave Antagonism understands this; unlike other writersfor the magazine he recognizes that it's not civilization per se that's the enemy, it's irrationality, greed and intolerance.A more accurate description of
Green Anarchy
's ethos is anti-capitalism. To combat thestatus quo the magazine betrays its stated mission by employing words, those great civilizers."Use your words," parents tell toddlers prone to hitting.
