ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION AND ASSESSMENT ________________________________________________________________________ HBEL2203 TEACHING OF READING SEPTEMBER 2013 ________________________________________________________________________ INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS 1.

This assignment contains only ONE (1) question that is set in the language of the printed module for the course. 2. Answer in English. 3. Download the language version of the assignment template concerned from the MyVLE for preparation and submission of your assignment. Your assignment should be typed using 12 point Times New Roman font and 1.5 line spacing. 4. Your assignment should be between 2500 to 3000 words excluding references. The number of words should be shown at the end of your assignment. Do not copy the assignment question and instructions to your answer. 5. You must submit your assignment TO YOUR FACE-TO-FACE TUTOR. You are advised to keep a copy of your submitted assignment for personal reference. 6. Your assignment must be submitted between 8th 10th November 2013 or Tutorial 4. Submission after 10th November 2013 or Tutorial 4 will NOT be accepted. 7. Your assignment should be prepared individually. You should not copy another persons assignment. You should also not plagiarise another persons work as your own.

EVALUATION This assignment accounts for 40% of the marks for the course mentioned and shall be assessed based on the Rubrics. You would be informed of the assignment mark before the Final Semester Examination commences. PLAGIARISM : MARKS DEDUCTION Warning : The submitted assignment will automatically undergo a similarity check. If plagiarism is detected, marks would be deducted as follows: Assignments with 10 - 30 % overlap with others: 20% deduction from the total marks scored. Assignments with 31 - 50 % overlap with others: 40% deduction from the total marks scored. Assignments with more than 50% overlap with others: Zero mark would be given.

ASSIGNMENT QUESTION INTRODUCTION: This assignment requires that you select and evaluate authentic texts and then exploit them for use in reading lessons. INSTRUCTION: 1. Select 4 authentic texts covering different topics /issues (such as environment, education, famous personality, technology, teenagers, etc.). The four authentic texts should be suitable either for your primary (Year Four) or secondary (Form Two) school pupils. Each text should about 200 - 300 words. 2. Download and print the authentic texts from the internet, or get them from the newspapers, magazines or any other printed materials. Label the texts as Text 1, Text 2, Text 3 and Text 4. Hand in these texts together with your assignment. TASK 1: Based on each authentic text, discuss whether the text is suitable for enrichment or a remedial activity for the teaching of reading. Justify your answer based on your readings and your teaching experiences. Each written discussion should be about 250 words. Total number of words for the four written discussions should be about 1000 words. Basic reference: Teaching of Reading module, Topics 7 and 9. You are expected to read beyond the module to source for ideas for your justifications. (16 marks) TASK 2: Based on each authentic text, devise an appropriate reading activity for your pupils. The activity can take the form of answering reading comprehension questions, diagram completion, information transfer, table completion, paragraph sequencing or any others that are appropriate for the teaching of reading. Present the activity for each text in a handout with clear instructions on what the pupils should do.
