This Is FRITZ!Box Fon

1 This Is FRITZ!Box Fon

FRITZ!Box Fon is a PBX that makes possible both conventional
telephone calls over fixed lines and Internet telephony with
DSL. It combines in one device a two-port PBX for connecting
analog devices, a DSL modem for direct connection to the DSL
splitter and an ISDN/analog connection to the fixed-line net-
work.
The PBX can be used as a DSL router connected by means of
a LAN port and a USB port, thus providing a firewall-protect-
ed Internet connection for two computers at the same time.
FRITZ!Box Fon can be connected by means of a network cable
or USB cable to computers with Windows operating systems,
the Linux operating system or Apple computers with the op-
erating system Mac OS X. Any number of network devices
can be connected to the FRITZ!Box Fon LAN port. These might
include game consoles or a network hub, for instance.

Package Contents

FRITZ!Box Fon provides fixed-line and Internet telephony for

two analog terminal devices. For Internet telephony over
DSL, FRITZ!Box Fon uses the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).
This manual contains information about installing, configur-
ing and operating FRITZ!Box Fon.

1.1 Package Contents

z one AC power adapter with cable for connection to the

Operation Requirements

1.2 Operation Requirements

In order to operate FRITZ!Box Fon, you must have the following:
z an ISDN point-to-multipoint line in accordance with the
Euro ISDN protocol DSS1, or an analog telephone line
z one DSL Line: Standard ITU G.992.1 Annex A or Annex B
(depending on hardware model)
z If you want to connect FRITZ!Box Fon over the computer’s
LAN interface, a computer with the following specifica-
tions is required:
– LAN port (standard network adapter Ethernet 10/100
Base-T), game console or other devices that support
a network
– To connect additional computers or a network, you
also need an Ethernet hub or switch.
z If you want to connect FRITZ!Box Fon over the computer’s
USB port, a computer with the following specifications is
required:
– USB port (USB version 1.1 or 2.0), hard drive and CD
drive
– Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP,
Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98, Linux
(from SUSE 9.0 upwards) or Mac OS X (from version
10.3.3 upwards)
z To install the DSL software FRITZ!DSL, the minimum
computer requirements are:
– 300 MHz Pentium II processor with Windows XP,
2000, Me or 98 and CD drive
– 32 MB RAM
– 20 MB free memory on the hard drive

1.3 FRITZ!Box Fon LEDs

The LEDs on your FRITZ!Box Fon indicate the following condi-
tions:
LED Event Type
Power shows the operation status of FRITZ!Box Fon
remains lit when the device has electrical power and
the DSL line is ready for operation
flashes if the device is connected to the mains power
supply, but the connection to DSL has been lost
Internet remains lit when a telephone connection to the Inter-
net is active
Fixed Line remains lit when a telephone connection to the
fixed-line network is active
DSL displays existing Internet connections
Info flashes when the system software is being updated
remains lit when phone calls are conducted com-
pletely over the Internet (this feature must be sup-
ported by the Internet telephony provider)

Operation
This chapter describes the various possibilities for connect-
ing and installing FRITZ!Box Fon. These include the following
steps:
z Mounting FRITZ!Box Fon
z Connecting FRITZ!Box Fon to the mains power supply, to
DSL and to ISDN or the analog telephone line
z Connecting analog terminal devices to FRITZ!Box Fon
z Connecting FRITZ!Box Fon to the computer
All steps required for connecting and installing the system
are described here in the manual and in the Installation Help
on the FRITZ!Box Fon CD. Insert the FRITZ!Box Fon CD in your
CD-ROM drive so that you can follow the installation instruc-
tions on the screen. The Installation Help starts automatical-
ly. If the Installation Help is not displayed automatically,
open the INTRO.HTM file on the FRITZ!Box Fon CD. Follow the
instructions from the Installation Help to install FRITZ!Box
Fon.
If you would like to connect and install FRITZ!Box Fon without
this Installation Help, see the instructions in the following
sections:

2.1 Mounting FRITZ!Box Fon

Set or hang up FRITZ!Box Fon in a dry, dust-free location
shaded from any direct sunlight. If you would like to connect
the device using the USB or network cable supplied with the
package, remember to consider the length of the cable and
select a location close to your computer.
If you would like to hang FRITZ!Box Fon on the wall, use the
drilling template on the last page of the installation manual.

Power Supply
Perform the following steps to connect FRITZ!Box Fon to the
mains power supply:
1. Position your FRITZ!Box Fon so that the sockets on the
back panel are facing you.
2. Remove the power supply unit from the package.
3. Connect the mains adapter to the socket labeled “Pow-
er”, located at the far right of the back panel of
FRITZ!Box Fon.
4. Plug the other end into an AC power outlet.

5. The green “Power” LED will begin flashing after a few
seconds.

Perform the following steps to connect FRITZ!Box Fon to DSL:
1. Remove the enclosed DSL (black or grey) cable from the
package.
2. Connect one end of the cable to the socket labeled
“DSL”, located at the far left of the back panel of
FRITZ!Box Fon.
3. Then connect the other end of the cable to the socket
on the DSL splitter labeled “DSL”. If the DSL line does
not fit in the splitter, insert the cable into the gray RJ45-
RJ11 adapter enclosed in the package and then plug the
adapter into the splitter.

4. The green “Power” LED stops flashing after a short time
and remains lit to signalize that FRITZ!Box Fon is ready
for Internet connections over DSL.

2.4 Connecting FRITZ!Box Fon to ISDN or

the Analog Telephone Line
FRITZ!Box Fon can be connected to an ISDN access or an ana-
log telephone line. To establish a connection, perform the
following steps:
1. Remove the enclosed ISDN/analog (black) cable from
the package.
2. Connect one end of the cable to the socket on FRITZ!Box
Fon labeled “ISDN/analog”.
3. If you have an ISDN access, connect the other end of
the cable to the socket of your ISDN Network Terminator
(NT).

If you have an analog telephone line as well as a DSL
line, connect the other end of the cable to the black
adapter for your telephone jack. Then use the adapter to
connect FRITZ!Box Fon to the socket on the DSL splitter.

2.5 Connecting Analog Terminal Devices to

FRITZ!Box Fon
FRITZ!Box Fon has been tested and CE-certified in accor-
dance with European Union directives. All analog telecom-
munication devices with CE certification can be connected to
its extensions.
To connect analog terminal devices such as telephones, fax
machines or answering machines, insert the telephone plugs
of your analog terminal devices into the “FON1” or “FON2”
socket on FRITZ!Box Fon.

Connecting an analog telephone to FRITZ!Box Fon

2.6 Connecting FRITZ!Box Fon to the

Computer
FRITZ!Box Fon can be connected to two computers directly,
via a USB port and a network (LAN) port. If you would like to
connect more than two computers to FRITZ!Box Fon at the
same time, you can connect a network hub or switch to the
LAN port of the FRITZ!Box Fon so that all of its features can be
provided for a small network.
Please note:
z If you would like to connect FRITZ!Box Fon to your com-
puter by means of the LAN port, first make sure that
your computer is equipped with a LAN port. A LAN port
is usually designated by the icon at left or labeled
“LAN”.
For more information, see the instructions in the sec-
tion “Connecting FRITZ!Box Fon to the LAN Port” from
page 19.
z If your computer is not equipped with a LAN port, con-
nect FRITZ!Box Fon using the USB port. If you would like
to connect FRITZ!Box Fon to your computer using a USB
cable, you must install the driver software from the
FRITZ!Box Fon CD on the computer.
Read the section that describes the installation for your
operating system in the section “Connecting FRITZ!Box
Fon to the USB Port of a Computer” from page 22.

Port
Using a LAN cable, FRITZ!Box Fon can be connected to the
computer in just a few steps. If you would like to connect a
network to FRITZ!Box Fon in order to connect several comput-
ers with DSL, then connect FRITZ!Box Fon to a network hub or
switch using the LAN cable.
Connection with the LAN cable functions independent of the
operating system. All computers must be equipped with a
network adapter (Ethernet card).
For more information on this topic, see the chapter “Guide-
book” from page 48. This section also includes information
on IP settings and DHCP.

Connecting FRITZ!Box Fon to the LAN Port of a

Computer
You will need the red LAN cable for this step.
1. Connect FRITZ!Box Fon to the mains power supply and
to DSL as described on page 14.
2. Switch on your computer.
3. Insert one end of the red LAN cable to the computer’s
network adapter.
4. Connect the other end of the LAN cable to the socket on
FRITZ!Box Fon labeled “LAN”.

FRITZ!Box Fon is now connected and ready for operation.
No additional driver installation is necessary on the computer.
If you configure FRITZ!Box Fon for an Internet connection, all
connected computers can use FRITZ!Box Fon to establish
connections to the Internet at the same time. See the section
“Basic Configuration of FRITZ!Box Fon” from page 28 for in-
formation about how to configure an Internet connection.

1. Connect FRITZ!Box Fon to the mains power supply and

An operating system version of 10.3.3 or higher is required
to connect FRITZ!Box Fon to the USB port of an Apple Macin-
tosh computer. If your Apple Macintosh computer works with
an older version, connect FRITZ!Box Fon via the LAN port of
your computer.

Connecting the USB Cable

You will need the white USB cable for this step. In the Windows
operating systems, the FRITZ!Box Fon CD is also required for
driver installation. No driver installation is necessary in the op-
erating systems Mac OS X and Linux.
1. Switch on your computer once the FRITZ!Box Fon has
been connected to the mains power supply and DSL as
described on page 14.
2. If a Windows operating system is installed on the com-
puter, insert the FRITZ!Box Fon CD now. No CD is re-
quired for the Mac OS X and Linux operating systems.
3. Connect FRITZ!Box Fon to the USB port. The USB cable
has two different plugs: one is flat and rectangular and
the other is square.

1. Open the YaST Control Center.
2. Select the option “Network Devices” and click “Network
Card”.
3. The “Network cards configuration” dialog appears.
4. Select “Other (not detected)” and the “Configure...”
button.
5. The device type of the network in the “Manual network
card configuration” window should be set to “Ether-
net”. Select the “USB” check box as well and click
“Next”.
6. In the input mask “DSL Configuration”, the PPP mode
should be set to Ethernet, for “Network cards to configure”
select “Other (not detected)”. Then click “Configure...”.
7. In the next dialog, “Network address setup”, select the
“Automatic address setup (via DHCP)” option. Click

In SUSE Linux 9.0, only one Ethernet adapter at a time can be
set to DHCP. If you have an additional network adapter, as-
sign it a fixed IP address. Otherwise problems may arise
with name resolution (cf. /etc/resolv.conf).

3 Configuring FRITZ!Box Fon

The first time FRITZ!Box Fon is configured, it is ready for oper-
ation and can be used for Internet connections, Internet
telephony and fixed-line telephone calls. If you would like to
make settings to FRITZ!Box Fon that go beyond this basic
configuration, open the FRITZ!Box window and work through
the following steps:
z Start your web browser.
z Enter the address “fritz.box” or “192.168.178.1”.

3.1 Going Online with FRITZ!Box Fon

After the basic configuration of FRITZ!Box Fon no further set-
tings are necessary for Internet connections, and there is no
need to install additional Internet access software. All con-
nected computers can start a web browser at any time and
surf the Net.
When you surf with FRITZ!Box Fon, all connected computers
are protected from unauthorized access from the Internet.
FRITZ!Box Fon indicates each active Internet connection on
the “DSL” LED.
Note that FRITZ!Box Fon automatically assigns IP addresses
to all computers that are supposed to use this Internet ac-
cess. For information on this topic, see the “Guidebook”
from page 48.

Settings for Internet Connections

The basic configuration of FRITZ!Box Fon includes all settings
required for Internet access. Further settings and monitoring
options are available in the FRITZ!Box window. These options
allow you to configure FRITZ!Box Fon according to your
needs.

Use the “Internet” menu to change Internet account informa-

tion, view connection information or change the port forwarding
settings to allow other parties access to your computer from the
Internet.

3.2 Making Phone Calls with FRITZ!Box Fon

The PBX FRITZ!Box Fon offers convenient options for making
phone calls using the fixed-line network and Internet
telephony. This chapter describes how to set up the system
according to your fixed-line and Internet telephony needs.
Initially no additional settings are required for telephone
connections, as an Internet number is assigned to FRITZ!Box
Fon during the basic configuration. This means that the sys-
tem can be used without any further settings on ISDN lines
and analog lines for Internet and fixed-line telephone con-
nections as soon as terminal devices are connected (tele-
phone, fax machine or answering machine). The following
basic settings are configured at the PBX extensions (“FON1”
and “FON2”):
z incoming calls can be accepted at both extensions;
connected terminal devices will ring at the same time
z outgoing calls can be conducted from both extensions

Settings for Telephone Connections

Additional settings must be made in the FRITZ!Box Fon win-
dow in order to use the features and convenience functions
of FRITZ!Box Fon on an ISDN line. These include the following
steps:
z Enter numbers for calls over fixed lines
z Assign Internet and fixed-line numbers to the connect-
ed terminal devices (the extensions “FON1” and
“FON2” on FRITZ!Box Fon)
z Define dialing rules for Internet telephony and calls on
fixed lines

Entering Numbers for Calls over Fixed Lines

Perform the following steps:
1. Select the “Telephony” menu command.
2. In the “Telephony Settings” window, select the “Fixed-
line numbers” option.
3. Enter here the numbers you received from the tele-
phone provider of your fixed-line network.
4. Click the “Apply” button.

Assigning Internet and Fixed-Line Numbers to the

Extensions
According to the basic configuration settings, all terminal de-
vices connected react to all incoming calls at the same time.
To ensure that the connected terminal devices react only to
certain numbers, assign the Internet and fixed-line numbers
to the different FRITZ!Box Fon extensions.
Perform the following steps:
1. Select the “Extensions” option in the “Telephony” win-
dow.
2. Select a number from the “Number of the extension”
drop-down menu in the “Extensions FON1” area. The
terminal device connected to the “FON1” extension re-
acts to incoming calls placed to this number and uses
the kind of connection specified for outgoing connec-
tions with this number.
3. From the “Additional numbers” drop-down menu, se-
lect any other numbers to which the terminal device at
the “FON1” line should react for incoming calls.
4. To ensure that the terminal device at the “FON1” exten-
sion reacts only to incoming calls to the specified
numbers, deactivate the option “React to all numbers”.
5. Configure the “Extension FON2”.
6. Click the “Apply” button.

Defining Dialing Rules

With the dialing rules you can influence the kind of connec-
tion for telephone connections with FRITZ!Box Fon. Perform
the following steps:
1. Click the “Telephony” menu command.
2. Click the “Dialing Rules” menu command.
3. In the “Carrier Prefix for Fixed Line Calls” area you can
specify a telephone provider prefix to be dialed automat-
ically before numbers for calls to the fixed-line network.
4. In the “Dialing Rules” area you can define the kind of
connection for ranges of numbers. Connections to rang-
es of numbers for which a dialing rule has been estab-
lished are always established in keeping with the kind
of connection specified.
Click the “New Dialing Rule” button to define as many
dialing rules as desired.
5. Click the “Apply” button.
This concludes the complete configuration of FRITZ!Box Fon
for Internet and fixed-line telephony.

Additional settings options for telephone connections are

can change the FRITZ!Box Fon settings and view information
about the system status in a user window.
To open the FRITZ!Box Fon user interface, start your Internet
browser and enter the address “fritz.box” or “192.168.178.1”.

Overview

4.1 Overview
This page presents information about the current status of
FRITZ!Box Fon. The window is divided into four areas:

Overview
The current firmware version of your FRITZ!Box Fon is dis-
played in the “Overview” area.

Ports
This area displays whether FRITZ!Box Fon is connected with
DSL and what the highest possible transfer speeds (send
and receive directions) are on the DSL line. It also shows
whether FRITZ!Box Fon is connected to computers by means
of the LAN or USB port.

Internet Connection
When FRITZ!Box Fon is configured as a DSL router, an addi-
tional “Internet Connection” area is displayed. This area
contains information about the Internet connection: the IP
address assigned by the Internet Service Provider, the status
of the Internet connection and the duration of the current
connection.

Internet Telephony
If you have configured FRITZ!Box Fon for Internet telephony,
the “Internet Telephony” area will be displayed as well. The
configured Internet numbers are displayed here along with
their name and status.

4.2 Initial Configuration

Go the the “Basic Configuration” menu and use the Wizard
to make the basic settings for FRITZ!Box Fon operation. Have
your Internet account information and login data for Internet
telephony handy when the Wizard starts and follow the in-
structions on the screen.

4.3 Internet
Internet Account Information
Specify on the “Internet Account Information” page whether
the FRITZ!Box Fon should establish the Internet connection
as a router. This Internet connection can be used by all com-
puters connected to FRITZ!Box Fon without having to config-
ure a separate Internet connection on each computer.
If you opt for this form of Internet access, enter the access in-
formation supplied by your Internet Service Provider for this
Internet connection.
The “Clear Internet connection automatically” option speci-
fies that the Internet connection will be cleared whenever
none of the connected computers has requested data from
the Internet. Enter a time period in seconds.
When FRITZ!Box Fon is configured as a router, the default set-
tings stipulate that programs on your computer or in your
LAN cannot be accessed from the Internet.
Click the “New Port Forwarding” in the “Port Forwarding”
window button to grant other parties from the Internet re-
stricted access to the computers connected to FRITZ!Box Fon
by opening certain ports to incoming connections.
Other parties then access your computer at the IP address
you were assigned by the Internet Service Provider. If a con-
nection is active, the IP address is displayed in the “Internet
Connection” area on the “Overview” page.

Port Forwarding
With the default settings in the FRITZ!Box Fon, programs on
your computer or in your LAN cannot be accessed from the
Internet. You have the option of granting other users con-
trolled access to your computer from the Internet. To do this
you must enable certain ports for incoming connections. The
ports serve to differentiate between applications (server ser-
vices) with the same IP address on one computer. Once you
have enabled the relevant ports in FRITZ!Box Fon, other users
can access your server at the IP address which FRITZ!Box Fon

was assigned by the Internet Service Provider. If a connec-

tion is active, the IP address is displayed in the “Internet
Connection” area on the “Overview” page.

DSL Information
For the technically interested user, this window presents an
overview of the most important data on the DSL connection.
The transmission speeds and the status of the DSL lines are
displayed graphically in the overview.
Below the graphic are displayed the transmission mode
used and the versions of the DSL software and the FRITZ!Box
Fon firmware.
The display options for this page include information on
ADSL transmission performance, ATM activity and the signal
spectrum.

4.4 Telephony
Internet Telephony
Enter your account information for Internet Telephony to
FRITZ!Box Fon here. Here you can set up a second Internet
number.

Extensions
In this section you assign the Internet numbers and the
fixed-line numbers to the FRITZ!Box Fon extensions.

Fixed-Line Numbers
If you are operating FRITZ!Box Fon at an ISDN access, enter
here all of the ISDN numbers (MSNs) you received from your
ISDN provider.

Extension Properties
In this area you can activate a number of convenience fea-
tures for the extensions.

Dialing Rules

Dialing Rules
With the FRITZ!Box Fon dialing rules you can influence how
your terminal devices behave during dialing. You can define
whether connections are to be established using the Internet
or the fixed-line network, and specify rules excepting certain
ranges of numbers.

section “Making Phone Calls with FRITZ!Box Fon” on
page 32.

Quick-Dial
In this area you can assign quick-dial codes to your tele-
phone numbers and Internet numbers. All of these numbers
then can be called simply by entering the quick-dial code.

4.5 Journal
Event Log
Messages about the activities and conditions of the
FRITZ!Box Fon Internet connection(s) are registered in the
Event Log. These messages are sent directly by FRITZ!Box Fon
and refer only to the DSL line and events associated with
FRITZ!Box Fon’s control of the Internet connection. Other ac-
tions, such as Internet connections controlled by programs
on the connected computers, are displayed in the respective
programs and not included here. See the Online Help in the
FRITZ!Box Fon window for an overview of the messages.

List of Computers
All connected computers are shown in the “List of Comput-
ers” window, displayed with their names, IP addresses and
MAC addresses.

4.6 System Settings

On this page you can update the system software and re-
store the factory settings to FRITZ!Box Fon.
Restoring the factory settings means deleting all settings on
FRITZ!Box Fon along with the access information for the In-
ternet connection. Use this function before allowing outside
parties to use FRITZ!Box Fon.

Update Firmware
Use these buttons to update the FRITZ!Box Fon firmware.
Proceed as follows to update the firmware:
Load the new firmware on your computer:
1. Go to the AVM home page (www.avm.de/en), select
“Download” and then “FTP Server”.
2. The “Cardware/FRITZBOX.FON/Firmware” folder con-
tains a file with the suffix “image”. Copy this file to your
computer.
Now you have saved the new firmware on your computer. The
next step is to perform the update.
1. Open your Internet browser and enter the address
“fritz.box” or “192.168.178.1”.
2. Select the “System Settings” menu command.
3. Click the “Update the Firmware” button.
4. In the text field, enter the path to the location of the
extracted update file. This entry can also be selected
using the “Browse...” button. The file ends with the suf-
fix “.image”.
5. Then click the “Update” button to start the update.
The power supply to FRITZ!Box Fon may not be inter-
rupted during the update and while the system is
restarting. Never abort an update in progress!
The status line informs you about the progress of the
update.

Factory Settings

A message appears announcing that the update has

been successfully completed. During the update proce-
dure the “Info” LED flashes. It goes out when the up-
date has been completed.
As soon as the update has been completed, FRITZ!Box Fon is
restarted and immediately ready for operation.

Factory Settings
Click the “Restore Factory Settings” button to reset FRITZ!Box
Fon back to its original configuration. All settings made dur-
ing operation will be overwritten.

Restart
Click the “Restart the System” button to restart FRITZ!Box Fon.

Advanced
In the “Advanced Settings” area experienced users can
make settings for the DHCP server and traffic shaping.
Do not make any changes in this area unless you are experi-
enced in working with network settings. Incorrect settings in
this area can lead to FRITZ!Box Fon malfunctions.
When the DHCP server of FRITZ!Box Fon is deactivated, every
network adapter connected to FRITZ!Box Fon must be as-
signed a fixed IP address.
Depending on the port used to connect the respective com-
puter to FRITZ!Box Fon, the following values must be set:
Line Settings Address
USB IP address: 192.168.179.2/250
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.179.1
DNS server: 192.168.179.1
LAN IP address: 192.168.178.2/250
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.178.1
DNS server: 192.168.178.1

Otherwise FRITZ!Box Fon cannot be reached.

Removing FRITZ!Box Fon

5 Removing FRITZ!Box Fon

Follow the instructions below to remove FRITZ!Box Fon:
If FRITZ!Box Fon is connected to the computer’s LAN port or to a
network hub, all you need to do is remove the network cable.
If FRITZ!Box Fon was installed at the computer’s USB port,
proceed as described in the following sections.

5.1 Uninstallation in Windows XP

Note that FRITZ!Box Fon can only be removed while it is con-
nected to the computer’s USB port.
Proceed as follows to remove the FRITZ!Box Fon driver soft-
ware in Windows XP:
1. Open the Windows System properties by clicking
through “start / Control Panel / Performance and Main-
tenance / System / Hardware / Device Manager”.
2. Click the “Device Manager” button on the “Hardware”
settings page.
3. In the “Network adapters” section of the Device Manag-
er, select the “AVM FRITZ!Box Fon” entry.
4. In the “Action” menu, select the “Uninstall” command.
5. Confirm the uninstallation in the following security
prompt. FRITZ!Box Fon will be removed.
This completes uninstallation of the driver software.
Proceed as follows to remove the FRITZ!DSL software package:
1. Open “start / Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs”.
Make sure that the “Change or Remove Programs” but-
ton is selected in the column to the left.
2. Select the “AVM FRITZ!DSL” entry from the list of “Cur-
rently installed programs”.
3. Click the “Change/Remove” button.
This concludes the removal of FRITZ!DSL.

ware in Windows Me/98:
1. Select “Start / Settings / Control Panel”, then double-
click the “System” icon.
2. Click on the “Device Manager” settings page.
3. In the “Network adapters” section, select the
“FRITZ!Box Fon” entry.
4. Then click the “Remove” button.
5. Confirm the uninstallation message by clicking “OK”.
6. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen. Keep
your Windows CD ready.
Rebooting the computer concludes the uninstallation.
Proceed as follows to remove the FRITZ!DSL software package:
1. Open “Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add/Remove
Programs”.
2. Select the “AVM FRITZ!DSL” entry from the list of “Cur-
rently installed programs”.
3. Click the “Add/Remove...” button.

1. Open the system properties of Windows by clicking
through “Start / Settings / Control Panel / System” and
select the “Device Manager...” button on the “Hard-
ware” settings page.
2. In the “Network adapters” section of the Device Manag-
er, select the “AVM FRITZ!Box Fon” entry.
3. In the “Action” menu, select the “Uninstall...” com-
mand.
4. Confirm the uninstallation in the following security
prompt. AVM FRITZ!Box Fon will be removed.
This completes uninstallation of the driver software of
FRITZ!Box Fon.
Proceed as follows to remove the FRITZ!DSL software package:
1. Open “Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add/Remove

6 Guidebook
The guidebook contains detailed instructions on the follow-
ing subjects:
z Linking Up the Cable Network

6.1 Linking Up the Cable Network

Extending the length of the FRITZ!Box Fon cables is no prob-
lem. Cables of the desired length can be purchased at any
computer store. Be sure to note the type of cable, and re-
member that the quality of the line may decrease as the
distance from the hub increases.
Follow the instructions below when purchasing extension ca-
bles:
z to extend the LAN, DSL and the ISDN/analog cable, use
the 10BT network cable, wired 1:1 with the following fea-
tures:
– STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) should be used for the
LAN cable
– UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) is suitable for the DSL
and ISDN/analog cable
Also note the following maximum cable lengths:
z DSL cable: 100 m
z DSL cable: 20 m
z ISDN/analog cable: 20 m
z USB cable: 3 m

Errors Opening the User Interface

6.2 Errors Opening the User Interface

If an error message is returned when you open the user inter-
face, please work through the following checklist:
z Make sure that all cable connections are plugged in se-
curely.
z The IP addresses of the connected computers must be
assigned automatically (see “IP Settings” on page 49).
z In the Internet browser, enter one of the following IP ad-
dresses in the place of “fritz.box”:
– 192.168.178.1
– 192.168.179.1
z No Internet connection may be established.

6.3 IP Settings
FRITZ!Box Fon is equipped with its own DHCP server. This
means that FRITZ!Box Fon assigns the connected computers
their IP addresses. The connected computers must be con-
figured such that they can receive their IP addresses auto-
matically from FRITZ!Box Fon. The steps for checking and
adjusting this option differ among the operating systems.
See the relevant section for your operating system.
If FRITZ!Box Fon is operated in a network, no other DHCP
server may be activated in this network. If you need to oper-
ate a DHCP server, please disable the DHCP feature in the
“Advanced System Settings”.

Obtaining an IP Address Automatically in Windows XP

Proceed as follows in Windows XP:
1. Go to “start / Control Panel / Network and Internet Con-
nections / Network Connections” and double-click the
LAN connection icon of the network adapter connected
to FRITZ!Box Fon to open the “Local Area Connection
Status” window.
2. Click the “Properties” button.
3. Select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” in the list of items
used in this network connection and click “Properties”.
4. Activate the options “Obtain an IP address automatical-
ly” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically”.

The computer now receives an IP address from FRITZ!Box Fon.

Proceed as follows in Windows Me/98:
Keep your Windows CD handy, as this may be required for
changes to your network settings.
1. Select “Start / Settings / Control Panel”.
2. Double-click the “Network” entry to open it.
3. In the list, double-click to select the binding designated
with an arrow, “TCP/IP -> <network adapter bound to
FRITZ!Box Fon>”.

“Disable DNS” option.

4. Double-click to select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” in the
list of network components.

the TCP/IP properties:
1. Select the “System Preferences” in the Apple menu.
2. In the “System Preferences” window, click the “Net-
work” icon.
3. In the “Network” window, select the “Built-in Ethernet”
entry from the “Show:” drop-down menu.

DHCP Server

4. Switch to the “TCP/IP” settings page and select the

“Using DHCP” option from the “Configure:” drop-down
menu.
Click “Apply Now”.

6.4 DHCP Server

FRITZ!Box Fon is equipped with its own DHCP server. This op-
tion is activated by default. Every connected computer obtains
an IP address assigned by the DHCP server.

Fixed IP Addresses
If computers connected to FRITZ!Box Fon are to be assigned
fixed IP addresses, note that the following IP address ranges
may not be used:
192.168.179.20 - 200
192.168.178.20 - 200

Other DHCP Servers

If FRITZ!Box Fon is operated in a network, no other DHCP
server may be operated in this network. If you need to oper-
ate a DHCP server, please disable the DHCP feature in the
“Advanced System Settings”.

FRITZ!Box Fon user interface.
